Description

Shortcut between Cachicadan and Huamachuco.
We drove up till this point (from the south) and this part was already in good condition.
it is possible to drive the road;
a good alternative to the detour on the 3N.

no construction, but a good shortcut to Huamachuco.
there are multiple options to get from Cachicadan to Huamachuco, and since the 3N is still under construction (road works at least till april 2020 with a tight schedule/closing times), it’s worth a try.
you should definitely ask locals (especially in rainy season) we took 117 (paved with some eroded parts) then 115 just for 3.7km then took a left detour at a small village before crossing the river. a rocky gravel road lead us to Santo Domingo, passing by a mine and finally to the fully paved 3N just 16 km before Huamachuco. this road is on maps.me and has a good bridge to cross the river and you don’t have to cross any creeks. locals recommended this route in rainy season (the best/fastest). it took us 1h15 taking it slow with our 2wd van. no high clearance required.

Report Check-In

same conditions as the last poster, 116 and 115 a bit rocky with some small creeks. 117 paved.

I took this from north to south. Took the 116 to the 115 to 117. 117 is in amazing fully paved condition. 116/115 is rocky with some small creek crossing. All vehicles should manage. The whole journey from Huamachuco to Cachicadan took me about 2 hours on a motorbike.

Report Check-In

The paving of the 117 is complete. 116 still unpaved. Very little traffic. Huamachuco to Cachicadan 55kms via this route vs more than twice that via the PE3.

Report Check-In

Very good small tarmac road. But this sign at the beginning so we turned and took the much longer 3N to Huamachuco. Ca. 100 km. Crossing a plateau above 4150m. Mining area. Tarmac road. Bad condition. There is a petroperu gas station next town. And next to it a good looking hostal.

Shortcut between Cachicadan and Huamachuco is under construction. We drove up till this point (from the south) and this part was already in good condition. As we had to wait for the workers to finish their job for over 30 minutes and it was already late afternoon we decided to turn around a find a place to sleep. But it is possible to drive the road; you'll only have to wait a few times. Don't know when the road will be finished but it will be a good alternative to the detour on the 3N.
