Description

Quiet border. Got a single entry Kenyan visa here, 50 USD. They prefer you to apply online though.

Carnet stamped. Paid 20 USD road tax for an 800cc motorcycle. If you stay less than a week no road tax has to be paid.

Update JULY 2023:
Best border. Relatively efficient. Mainly local trucks and motorbikes passing through. We didn’t pay a cent. No hassle for bribes. Barely any fixers.

Apply for Kenyan/East African eVisa online. Approval in 2-3 business days. Print out approved visa.
150 CC Tanzanian motorbike. TIP stamped, 14 days for free. No road tax charged. No insurance offered, no one checked (should be 3500 KSh).

Tanz>Kenya. Easy border crossing both sides - used CDP. Did not need printed Kenyan Evisa - just showed them copy on my phone. They stamped passport.

From Tanzania to Kenya. We had printouts of our EATV, online applied an paid. They stamped us in and wrote EATV with pen next to the stamp. All fine and quick we thought. But when we wanted to do immigration procedures in Moroto, small Uganda border coming from Turkana, they didnt accept the stamp. We should have received a slick sticker at Loitokitok. Only option was to buy a single entry for Uganda or go back to a big border in Kenya to get the sticker after all. We did that and got it without any hassle at Busia border.

Tanzania to Kenya.
With motorbike 150 CC, Tanzanian registration.
Don’t forget to apply for your eVisa online at least 2-3 working days before entering and print it out.
Kenyan visa: $50 USD. East African Visa: $100 USD.

Honestly the best border crossing we’ve experienced in all our time in Southern and Eastern Africa. Barely any fixers. Very friendly staff. Relatively efficient for Africa speeds. We didn’t pay a cent, and there was no hassle.

Leaving Tanzania:
1. Immigration. Very quick and simple. Exit stamp here.
2. Health tent. Check yellow fever cards.
3. Customs. Show motorbike registration paperwork. Printed us our TIP temporary import permit to be stamped on the Kenyan side of the border. Note there is no charge.

Kenyan side:
1. Immigration. Friendly border security staff. Entry stamp and photo without issue. Note that you have to bring your PRINTED Kenyan or East Africa eVisa (easy to apply online, takes 30 mins to complete, 2-3 working days before approval).
2. Customs. Gave them the printed TIP from the Tanzanian customs side. They stamped it. No charge for TIP (14 days is free). We did not pay for third party insurance (but it should be 3500 KSh and you can buy it at the border). No one checked when we left the border. We couldn’t find who to buy it from.

Money change on Kenyan side:
the legit money changer is in the general store on the right side of the road just 10m past the gate on the Kenyan side. The store is blue and recognisable by the metal bars across the entrance. Good rate; he took a 2.8% commission (haggled down from 3.5%). Beware if you use the money changers outside the store, they are dodgy.

This border is open. We passed from Kenia to Tanzania easily. We were able to re-use our still valid single entry Tanzania visa without any cost. Don't confuse this border with the Rongai border that is mentioned on Google maps, that is 10 km from this one but is not open.

There is no ATM on the Tanzania side. Getting currency might be difficult.

very friendly border. 10 minutes to exit Kenya, passport stamped, vehicle documents checked at customs. To enter Tanzania you first stop at the tent for temperature check and verification of the printed online form from ministry. No check of the PCR test and trusted traveller form. Free rapid test done in 5 minutes. 3 months Visa at immigration for 50 US$(German shepherds passports) done in 30
minutes while we received the TIP (3 months 90 US$ for our truck to cross TZ).

Kenya - Tanzania

Leaving Kenya very easy,
one officer tried to tell us off for not having a carnet for the car as we only had a TIP. But we apologised and left.
No problems.

Entering Tanzania
We didn’t have to pay for another visa as our single entry visa we had brought 6weeks ago was still valid, so we could renter for free.
Car - had to pay $20 for road tax.
Can only pay at the bank so had to drive about 1.5 km to pay and get stamped then back again.
Very easy but a little slow.
(Tanzania Visas are $50pp)

We easily left Kenya and entered Tanzania here. Required to show our yellow fever vaccination booklet at the Tanzanian border. No evisa needed. Paid 50USD for 90 day visa (Australian and British passports).
Border guard then showed us to a cheap hotel next to the border post as it was late.

Tanzania to Kenyz. Austrian citizen and car. No carnet.

Exiting Tanzania was very easy. Go to the Custom and get the stamp for the TIP. Next door there is immigration. Fill the form and get the exit stamp. That’s it.

Entering Tanzania was more hard. Here you can only enter with the online visa any longer. So you have to get the visa online in advance.
After immigration the problems with customs started. The custom guy told me they gave no TIP and will only allow foreign cara with carnet. Even when there is a paper saying 14 days TIP for foreign vehicles for free since 2018. But you also have to do it online im advance. Even with the C32 printed online form he told me it’s not possible without carnet.
After a long discussion he took me to his boss and explained my problem. In the end the boss ‘’allowed’’ him to issue me a TIP for 14 days....

Only had to pay online for the Visa and nothing at the border (even not for 14days TIP and car)

Changing TShilling to KShilling possible. Also buying SIM card.
