cycled up from Huaraz, very tough climb. had emailed, WhatsApp, Facebook, and rung to find out if Refugio open. No response at all, Arrived mid afternoon but had to pay 60 sols for 2 days, allowed to camp at Refugio for 10 sols, Unfortunately Refugio was closed, but they left the lights on all night, so rather spoilt the night sky photos I'd planned. Stunning spot, shame about 24 hour lightsReport Check-In
We drove our pickup truck (F350) and left the camper in Huaraz. The road is rough, and is very narrow in the beginning near the houses. We needed 4WD but we had no weight in the back of the truck so it would spin out. I personally would not drive anything up except a truck and leave your home behind. It is very bumpy and lots of loose rocks. Took us about 90 minutes with a couple of breaks to rest from the tossing around. We gave the gatekeeper 5SOL and there were no park rangers anywhere so did not pay for entry, I would not assume this is normal. Once at the refugio it's a short walk to see the lake, and you can walk about 1 mile to go to the glacier, which I highly recommend, it's very cool. Great day trip, but you have to get out from the gate by 3pm. Refugio serves food and drinks. We brought our dog and no one said anything, so it seemed fine.Report Check-In
I drove up early, on the way I met the guy in charge of the gate. He told me the gate was very locked and gave me the key for the lock. When I drove back I met him again and he asked me for 10 Sol. It looks like the gate is locked at night. Nice day trip by motorbike from Huarez. I think it would not be a problem to carry the equipment to the lake and camp there.Report Check-In
Really fun and scenic 4x4 offroad drive up to the Refugio Llaca at 4400 mtrs.
At 11.30 am the NP entrance was unattended and the gate closed but not locked. I opened the gate and kept driving until the Refugio. The Laguna Llaca is a short walk from the Refugio. Flat parking/camping area next to the Refugio.
