Lot of great spots next to a gravel road
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
Dispersed camping, free. The road in can be bumpy. It seems to get smoother and more level the farther down the road you go. It was quiet and not crowded during our stay.
No bees bothered us, as they have plenty of water to drink in the big mud puddles that are still here in mid March. That's why they harass folks. Looking for water. Didn't see any snakes either.
Pretty area, lots of flatish roads around bushes, etc, some trash... but an absolute madhouse... even driving further into the valley, very crowded, as the road is well packed. Some potholes, mud ruts, and large dips to nativgate (I pull a standard 5 x 8 cargo trailer with a RAV4 hybrid, and no problems)... Rattlesnakes abound now - one came through my spot yesterday. Dogs allowed only on roads, this is still State Park land, please clean up after them and mind the snakes! Verizon LTE is one to two bars, in and out, occasional blip of slow data, in and out.
Report Check-InClassic high desert camping. It can be cold at times. It was upper 30s this morning.
Report Check-InTons of great camping options and amazing views, but at least where I was, there were nonstop bees which definitely killed the atmosphere.
Report Check-InFirst group of campgrounds to the right are good for various vehicle sizes and types. If you head in further the road is tight, there are sharp turns that make towing difficult and it will not be possible to turn around. There is a large space about a half mile in that appears to be a trailhead but i was able to overnight safely. Gorgeous views.
Report Check-InBlair Valley Campground is a California State Park, one of the few that is free. It is popular, and with lots of space to accommodate campers and RVs of all sizes, including Class A motorhomes. Primative camping with few services. Clean. Well maintained. Pit toilets. Metal fire rings must be used (buy and burn local wood). Leashed dogs permitted. OHV prohibited. See photo for posted rules. 1-bar LTE mobile service. Very popular spot on this Washington's Birthday long weekend #YMMV
Update:: 2nd time here. Arrived back at this campground Dec 23, 2023. Spent 3 nights. Quiet. Lots of space. Nights are cool. Woke up to -5°C (23°F) on Christmas morning. cell service is good enough YT and phone calls. Bring what you need. Other than pit toilets and fire rings, there are no services.
Report Check-InGreat boondocking area with fairly good cell service (sprint). Close to Julian & has toilets near the front of the campground.
Report Check-InLovely desert camping with tons of room, easy access and great walks - don't miss the viewpoint after the pictographs.
Report Check-InHuge campground between vault toilets at the entrance and the pictograph trail 5 miles away. Lots of spots all over. Just stay off the dry lake.
