From Brazil into Uruguay. Easy border crossing.

If you have a vehicle, it's best to pre-register before you get to the border, as OutboundBrothers mentioned.

Go to https://aduanas.gub.uy/

Click on Vehiculos turista extra MERCOSUR

Click on the link "ingrese aqui."

You'll be asked for your email address.

When you enter your email address, they'll send you an email with a link to fill out the vehicle registration form. Once completed, you'll get a confirmation screen with a document number. The customs official will enter this number into the system and print out your import document.

If you don't fill out the registration form ahead of time, it's no big deal. You can do it while you wait in the office, but it's easier if you do it ahead of time.

Insurance is required in Uruguay. If you don't already have insurance, stop in Chuy before you come through customs. They will ask to see your proof of insurance.

You MUST visit migration/customs on both sides of the border and it is easy to miss the station. The process took about 15 minutes on both sides. Very friendly border officials. Very quiet on a Friday morning. On BOTH sides, the usual procedure is: visit migration office first, hand in or obtain your TIP next.

Since a month back you need to fill out a form online prior to entering Uruguay. You can find the form on aduanas.gub.uy under the tap “vehiculos turista extra mercosur”. They ask for the declaration number at the border.

Check your TIP! The printer often doesn‘t work correctly and cuts of 2 of the 5 numbers of your TIP. Everything else looks fine but always check that your TIP has 5 numbers, othervise you will have problems with customs before shipping.

Very easy exit from Uruguay. We were on our way in 5 min. Friendly people!

Urg-> Bra
Parking available northbound side off the road. Walk across the main road and follow signs to migration for exit stamp in passport and then to aduana for an exit stamp on TIP. You can take a photo with the new stamp and they keep the TIP. Quick 5 minute stop at 8 am on a Tuesday. On through no man’s land until Brazilian building North of Chui.

Brazil to Uruguay: Tried to cross border as foreigners (Germany) with Chilean car. Immigration was no problem, but one of the Aduana guys insisted that it is (generally!) not possible to cross borders with a car plated different than your residency according to passport, no matter who it belongs to. Since I have no Chilean residency, they didn‘t want to let us through. Her colleague was nice, though, and discussed with her. We didn’t give up and said that we just wanted to stay for a couple of days because we are just traveling through Uruguay to access Argentina. She provided us a TIP, but was not happy about that. They didn‘t check the car, but asked for insurance.

Brazil to Uruguay: We parked on the left side and had to go in the building on the right - left door migration, right door aduana. Quick and easy, no look inside our motorhome.
90 days for us, 1 year for our motorhome

Uru -> Uru
We visited the free zone. Our way back into Uruguay they checked for food inside our fridge. No meat or vegetables allowed, also not if frozen.
We got the choise confiscated or turn around.
We turned around, took care of our things.
An hour later we returned. They checked only our TIP and wished a pleasant journey.

Entering Uruguay took about 5 minutes, very straightforward. No van checks needed but they did read the paperwork for our insurance policy very carefully.

If you are only crossing to go into free zone from Uruguay and returning, no need to stop. (we asked to be sure) However, the second time we returned, they did ask what we bought. We had a few bananas but lied and they did not check. Both times they did ask us to open the door to coach.

We are from the US and presented our passports at the migration window. We were immediately stamped in with no forms, no copies, no questions asked. We were given 90 days. In the same building and connected to migration is the Aduna to obtain the TIP. Presented our vehicle registration and the driver’s passport and after about 10 minutes of data entry were issued the TIP for 90 days. Make sure they put your VIN number correctly on the form! Painless and quick, no inspection.

brazil -> uruguay.

The guards asked for car documents and looked inside the motorhome but very briefly - did not check for food.
