Description

Current advice is that it is inadvisable to do this route in a 2-wheel drive. We managed fine. It’s not the best road but the Lagunas are so worth it!

*** Terrible road. If you are coming with your motorhome think twice about the damage it may cause.

Jan. 2024: Roadworks ongoing, parts is now sand with tarmac (not to be confused with asphalt) but approx 25km to the lakes is hefty washboard where you should take it easy

Not worth the damage it does to your car. The Lagunas are cool but not worth the TERRIBLE road. The first 7km are good but then it’s washboard for about 35km.

Report Check-In

It’s more than 30km washboard road. Not as bad as Lagunaroute, but still annoying. Took us 1,5 hours with 2 WD Campervan to get to Lagunas.

Report Check-In

Road is perfect for Washboard lovers. All the way from approx the Magic Bus entry, to the lakes and onward, at least 25km hefty washboard, we did approx 20-35km/h with our 3.5T 2WD campervan from '99.
Just take your time, take it easy, and think about the awesome lakes you're going to dip in and you'll be fine!

Road is ok for any vehicle, some parts you can drive 70-80 km/h, some parts very bumpy. We passed the skimming machine on the way back so they are working on it!

Report Check-In

We think the road was okay, no big holes or big stones, only a lot of washboarding (10 km or so). No problems with our motorhome. It’s just not very comfortable and very noisy with a motorhome…but lagunas are so beautiful

They told us the machine had just been there.

I'm here for second time and the road is just road. Very ok for any of vehicle. Speed is the key. If you go slow 15-20kmh it's okay for any vehicle. Some parts you can go 60kmh. I haven't seen any issue for tires if your have anything not too old.

Washboard road. No serious ruts or anything. 2wd is no problem. It’s roughly 40km to the pools. Expect 1-2hrs to get there. Only saw 2 vehicles with a popped tire on our trip…

Report Check-In

Idk if the road was redone, but it’s completely fine. With our 2WD Toyota 4Runner (good off-road tyres and high clearance), we could go at 70-80km/h easily till the Laguna. It’s a good gravel road, just be careful, with the speed, it can become slippery.

Report Check-In

Went through this road with a motor home (pick up truck with heavy back camper) and that's fine.

First 15km were perfect (you can go fast) and visible tractors are fixing the road. Then the washboard begins.

There are sections (perhaps 3 to 5km in total where we went at 10 to 20km/h) that need caution and to slow down. The rest of the road to the lagoon we managed at speed of 30 to 40 km/h and no things flying around (well, fizzy drinks will be shaken).

Road after the lagoon further south is mint. We went 90 km/h and was all the way smooth to the next intersection (around 60km).

We passed a machine smoothing the first 15 km or so today, so that part is ok. Rest of the road is quite some washboard, but not the worst imaginable. Not a fun driving experience, though.

The road have some really bad parts. we started it with our van, until the road to the magic bus. Then we decided to let the van there because even if it's doable, you can really damage it. So we stopped the 1st 4x4 we saw, and asked if we can come with him.He accepted. We saw a few cars passed around 10am. People say it's better to to there in the morning because this laguna is opened for 5 years only, so that's the new attraction, all the tourist buses come in the afternoon.

Sexiest washboard I've seen in a long time! (we turned around, couldn't handle it)

Report Check-In

Washboard came back, still doable in normal car but almost 1h drive after leaving the main road
Be very careful! We got a flat tire on the way back, saw a bus getting one too and then saw three other cars getting one. Dangerous road for tires

Report Check-In

Based on a number of comments I was expecting a teeth rattling ride, but it was absolutely fine. No washboard whatsoever, and cruised leisurely asking at 60-70km. Some areas of looser gravel, and sand but I just slowed a bit. Maybe they skim the surface periodically and I got lucky. Lagoons are awesome.

Report Check-In

Terrible road. We didn’t have the patience to get to the lagunas. Also we care about our car/house.

Not sure what road the person who posted last was driving on but this one is 45km of relentless washboard. The faster you drive the more bearable it is but make no mistake. This road has not been repaired, it’s a miserable hour especially in a van.

Report Check-In

The ripio is excellent. Not sure what some people are complaining about (maybe they improved the road recently). I could drive between 70 and 80kph all along. The lagunas are fine but you can see plenty of them in Argentina and Bolivia. Cold water, these are not thermal baths ;)

Report Check-In

The road is like a washboard the entire length, but it‘s doable with a normal car.

Read everywhere that it is unadvisable to do in a 2 wheel drive. We managed fine. It’s not the best road but the Lagunas are so worth it!
