Description

BMGR is military land managed by the Fish and Wildlife Department.
Area B is a Gorgeous Wilderness Public recreation area where backcountry camping is allowed with a free permit.

First: get your permit online (Cabeza Prieta Headquarters in Ajo (for location see Ioverlander) could provide more info and maps).
Secondly: drive 10 miles on 85 state road to gate 15, open the lock with the 4 numbers you have been given with your permit and lock it behind you. Call rangers when entering.
Third: choose your spot and enjoy.

If you are lucky you can watch bighorn sheep.
No shade. 25 degrees Celsius in February.

beautiful area..details for entry have changed a bit since the last update. still need to permit but when you register, you need to select one of three areas for Goldwater east. I believe this area is Sauceda. gate 15 is written on the gate itself, but not an option on the permit website. definitely an area worth enjoying!!

Beautiful area to hike and camp... however, one can only drive in about 1/4 mile as the road is closed. We planned to overland deep into Area B but we cannot. Lots of Highway noise! 2bars Verizon. No reliable T-mobile.

Beautiful spot to camp in the desert with mountains around you.
The road is a bit rough in spots once you are through the gate but it’s not bad.
Only saw one other rv and a renter when we went for a long walk.
Beautiful sunrise and sunset.
Worth the effort to get the permit.

Ok, wow. This place has been a major highlight on our travels around Arizona. First off, getting the permit is a bit of a hassle cuz you have to watch the whole 8 minute video and each person needs a permit (we think!). We anticipated more military activity but there wasn’t much while we were here…we did hear a bomb go off one morning. The campsites are really nice, flat, spaced out. We encountered several other campers when out on foot but couldn’t see anyones camp. Our 2wd truck made it just fine. The landscape here is incredible. Camping among saguaros, reddish rocks, chaparral…gorgeous. We hiked around the mountainous rocks quite a bit and saw the most amazing sunset. Super clean, we found some old water bottles while hiking and picked them up. This place has the pristine quality of a national park but it’s free and there’s no one around.

Beautiful stopover on the way to Organ Pipe NM. We have the whole place to ourselves! And it’s a no-fee permit! Gotta love Arizona.

Just beautiful. Really worth the time to get the free permit. Wish we'd come earlier in the year, though. It was really hit so we didn't stay long.

There are maybe half a dozen or so good camping spots. Cell/data reception was hit and miss.

Get your permit online, not at the Refuge office, even though they’ll be able to help you with all kinds of camping in the area.

Great place and to add to the above clear description, you’ll have to go to the library in the cute town of Ajo and take an easy quick test (skip to the end and say yes), then print out the permit to camp. During the morning and evening hours, you may hear some military jets fly over nearby as they conduct training, minor annoyance. The camping behind the gate is lovely! Enjoy!
