We stayed in this upper parking lot for a couple of hours before the police came knocking at 1am, searched our van, said we had to pay a fine for parking here, and drew out their handcuffs when we asked if we could just move. Eventually they got sick of our lack of Spanish and let us move to the lower lot by the hospital. We thought they were finally going to leave us alone but in the end said they needed 100 pesos for “coffee” so we gave in to the bribe and didn’t sleep the rest of the night! We stayed two other nights by the statue with no problems, just a little loud.
