Description

West side of the mountain range offers lots of little pull outs from the forest service road. 30-45 mins from Tombstone.
Great area. Worth the slow drive down the gravel road. I made it pretty easily in my minivan - I stayed here 5 days. Good AT&T and Verizon. Definitely need to be ok with possibly some cowpies in your camp but they don't smell. Possibly some cowbells at night but I didn't have that.

Beautiful spot near giant boulders and mountains. Some rock climbing spots around. You can get pretty close to this spot in a sedan but the last little bit is severely washed out. With careful driving and a partner, I was able to drive to this spot in my RAV4 that has all terrain tires. Worth it if you can make it! Beautiful shade trees and lots of birds<3

Great spot! We passed lots of other campers on the way in, but there were still lots of spots to choose from, and it didn’t feel crowded because everything is so spaced out. We had 2 bars of ATT, good enough for Netflix. They had just graded the road in so it was smooth. We would definitely come back. No cow pies in our spot, but we did here a cowbell wandering through at night.

Really nice spot. Drive in was rough but they smoothed it out while I was here. Drive out was much easier. Good ATT signal with a cell booster. Verizon struggled.
Loved seeing the cows every day and hearing the coyotes at night.

Washboard dirt road in, and when you hit the National Forest, the road gets worse. I would recommend high-ish clearance, though I saw plenty of RVs and vans (I'm in a shuttle bus). Definitely scraped my battery box on some of those dips. You don't need 4wd if you follow the road, but if you go into the washes, there is deep sand. Worth the drive if you stay for a little longer. I stayed for about a week. There are plenty of spots, but it seems pretty popular at this time of year. Go early in the morning to get a good spot. Lots of good hiking!

Same spot as sunny16869 (thank you!) - under the huge oak by the windmill (4806 is the faded marker). Several good spots (big & small) along 687. Found a couple really nice up next to the mtn < 5 miles N of 4806. Great views!
FYI - 4806, that goes by the windmill, can get a little busy.

A Goldilocks spot: lots of pulloffs and fire rings. The area isn’t too empty/isolated, and spots are spaced enough that even when full, it doesn’t feel busy. Stayed for 7 days and could have happily stayed longer, given the cell service and nearby trails up to Sheepshead Dome.

There is a big flat area by parking for the crag. Always a few vans. Skip the pulloff to that and you’ll find more spots (I just use google maps satellite to scope out options). Further down the road towards Slavin Gulch the cell signal disappears.

Very packed on a Wednesday night in mid-January! Beautiful mountain views. I arrived around 3pm and grabbed the last spot that had cell service and there were 11 massive piles of old poop scattered about. There were quite a few bees.

I’m in a 4x4 Sprinter and aired down before the 10 mile washboard road and I was able to do most of it at 40-45mph. There are a few sections near residences where you have to slow down to 15mph. It was bad in some spots but I thought it was going to be way worse considering the reviews on the Campendium app.

Road 687 is manageable. I was impressed with all the big RV’s and Skoolies back there. You’ll be going through washboard, then rocky inclines and descents, and then soft sand. I was fine in 2WD. Road is definitely uneven and I was wobbling like mad but none of my cabinets broke open. I took some side roads to scope out spots close to the rocks and for those you definitely want HC and maybe even 4x4 as there is some deep sand. I was also not able to find any with good Verizon service and I needed to get some work done.

Most spots along the main road have 1-3 bars Verizon LTE. Mine had 1 bar LTE and it was a strong bar so I didn’t put my booster up. I was able to log onto my work vpn and work just fine.

Enjoy :-)

Drive up Middlemarch Rd., take 687 at the “Y”, and take your first right. Drive up to the windmill & water tank to park under some mature oaks for the best shady spot!

Beautiful area in the rocks near the Slavin Trailhead. Good Verizon service even though only 1 bar, no ATT signal. Decent access but sandy and uneven back roads

Report Check-In

Got here by taking a BLM road off of North Middlemarch Road. The next morning we tried to continue down the road in the opposite direction as per our GPS instructions. About 30 minutes in we were met with locked gates and clear signage that the road became private property and was not open for public use. Unfortunately, we had to turn around and take the rocky drive back to Middlemarch Road to get back on the highway.

There are plenty of spots along the road, some more accessible than others but not 4WD necessary. The road can get rough but we saw several big rigs and a school bus past our point. Definitely a lot of campers but the windy road and vegetation gave a sense of privacy. Fire rings available and many spots for hammocks. Beautiful sunset and not too chilly at night.

beautiful site with many spots for vans, car camping and tents. Good Verizon service

Nice large spot back off of the road a little. Stayed here over Christmas.
