if you are on your way to San Rafael, then turn off here and drive the paved RP180 and then the gravelroad RP 173 north. You will find a very scenic route through the canyon. Great surroundings and well worth doing the detour through this canyon. No problem to drive this gravel road even with a big rig, not much traffic. Take your time there are many photo opportunities (condors) and also many places for a day stop or overnight stop.

Great detour but make sure you allow enough time. The detour is about 90-100 km out of which about 45 km are ripio (some okay, some washboard).
Report Check-InDrive this canyon!! The road is great for any vehicle (and paved along the lake) But the views are spectacular- the geologist in you will be awed. So many types of rocks and formations.
Many beautiful campsites along the way. Water flow changes with dam controls. Changing daylight changes the views. No services. No cell signal. Take your trash out.
