South Africa
Rooihoek is also an official campsite (next to Doodsklip) in the Baviaanskloof. 6 places, but you don't see each other. Bush camp feeling with only some shared long drop toilets and a braai stand on every site.
Beneath the red cliff, where the campsite name is coming from, we saw some people swimming. No phone coverage.
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
Beautiful and still campsite with a lovely pool in the river for swimming. Only longdrop toilets. No water.
Baboons and monkeys can be a problem, so make sure your food, tents, etc is secured.
The bees and ants where quite pesky during the day.
We did make a reservation for this campsite at the entrance of the reserve.
Report Check-InMuch better than Doodsklip in hot days as the river is closer (about 150mts from closest campsite). Stayed 1 night at campsite 1 with lots of shade but too many ants everywhere crawling on you and eventually bitting. We moved to Campsite 2 which has just enough shade and better mountain views. A peaceful bushbuck visited us. We saw baboons and vervet monkeys but they ran away and didn't try to steal food. Count 2h20m to arrive here from check-in area in Komdomo campsite. Also note that no hiking without a ranger is allowed in the park. There's no cellphone coverage in most parts of the Reserve including Doodsklip and Rooihoek Campsites. We paid 413 for camping + 148 conservation fees per night for 2 people. Wildcard is not accepted in this reserve. If you've been to other african countries this Campsite may not be anything special but being here on a weekend and not surrounded by 50 other people is quite something in South Africa. 😉
Report Check-InHad a good stay at campsite 6. All sites are spaced far apart. 1, 2, and, 3 are near a nice swimming beach. We found another swimming spot near site 6 by following an animal track down to the river.
The R437 pn for 2 people (plus R50 pp conservation fee) is expensive for basic facilities, but the peace and quiet makes it a worthwhile stop. The long drops were okay (3/5 comfort rating).
Report Check-Inthe campground is 380 R for the site plus 70 entrance pp for the park!
we skipped that and went to a privat campground close to the entrance.
