Description

Campsite at Rocking J's hostel, right in Puerto Viejo. We had read that this is a party hostel so we weren't that keen to stay there but after trying numerous other places and no one letting us camp, we pulled in and it was actually fine. The camping area is just outside the main hostel so not too noisy and has lovely green grass. Bathrooms are nothing fancy but are ok, there is wifi and a kitchen and a laundry. Definitely big enough for all size rigs. The price is now $7pp. It is really central so easy to walk into town at night.

** NOT BIG RIG FRIENDLY ** we were not able to enter with our short skoolie (22 foot long). The gate is not high enough (we are 3meters high and could not enter)

I don’t what exactly they mean below when they say ‘one of those hostels’…
I free camped in the general area plenty and had nothing but good experiences. Decided to spend a couple nights here to be within walking distance of restaurants, bars and supermarkets for a few days… as well as needing some wifi, and a shower! Did the trick

Stayed here 11/02/2024; you can put your tent for 7 Dollars. Nice location, and property itself. If you are coming like me straight from The border from Panama, Don’t worry they accept Card and dollars so after check in you can find cash machine in The village.

We had a wonderful couple of days here and likely would have stayed longer if our schedule would have permitted it.
We loved the mosaics everywhere and we had the grassy area for campers all to ourselves. The trees at the beach were perfect for hanging a hammock. Friendly staff. The German bakery is excellent and walking distance away! Careful.

Great space to park /. Ideal for big rigs in terms of height clearance. Only downside is only two sockets to charge up from in the bathroom. Otherwise u‘d have to hang out on the other side of the campground near reception to charge up powerbanks etc.

big rigs can fit here! (7.5m x 3.4m) nice enough spot.. powered site 8500 for 2 people.. no designated sites bit of a mish mash.. toilet, cold showers, internet, drink coupon gets you a tequila shot or similar, card fee 13% and large US bills bad exchange rate, stayed friday night, suprisingly fairly quiet, only 1 powered site it seems .. under a mushroom statue thingy

Stayed here one night. Would be fine in a van as parking is on a field next door. For tenting it's all pretty close together under a shelter and next to the bar which turns off music about 11pm. It was low season and was ok. Would not stay in high season. The vibe is no my scene and I am thankful the had lockers to put stuff in.

We stayed three nights total (with a one-night break for wild camping in Punta Uva). We would stay again if we wanted to be in Puerto Viejo. The location makes it easily walkable into town, particularly to Gustibus Bakery where I could spend the rest of my life. We paid 7,400 colones/night for two adults (they didn’t charge for 5 yo Caspian). Vehicle camping is in a grassy field, where you can get shade in the afternoon from the building (which we found out is an “ark” that can withstand a tsunami). The biggest highlight was the cold shower. Both showers and restrooms were kept surprisingly clean for the number of guests. There is also a kitchen with stoves and cooking/dishware. I used it once to wash dishes. There is WiFi and picnic tables for working/charging phones, but we didn’t use them. We didn’t find the hostel particularly loud, even on the Friday night. We could hear music from other parts of town. The whole place is gated. You can’t get in the pedestrian or vehicle gates without a key, and guests have to wear colored wristbands. I can’t say I loved the vibe, which skewed single traveling men, but that’s probably just me. We didn’t have any issues and we would stay again like I mentioned.

first of all, the sign hanging from the arch to the reception area is 2.7m and not 3m, which isn't a big deal as this is only reception and not the camping area. if you are to tall you can pull over on the side of the road to check in and the camping area is in a different gate two driveways to the west where there are no size restrictions. they asked for 14 dollars but if you pay in colones they only wanted 7400c so a bit cheaper. it's a huge grassy camping area with several flat spots. my recommendation is to not park in the middle as this is a high traffic area and people are coming and going all day and night to the casitas and the big house is where it seems like the employees take brakes. very friendly and clean. for being a party hostel the main area has quiet hours at 10pm that were enforced and the bar area was open until midnight when they closed.

3700 colones pp for own tent/hammock. Tent area is "cozy" but covered from the rain which is pretty critical now that the rainy season has hit. very large storage lockers that'll fit even moto panniers. Gates locked at night. Seems to be the cheapest camping option in the area as I was advised against wild camping on the coast by locals, but it's definitely one of "those" kind of hostels, so not for everyone.

We tried to enter with our motorhome, but with a height of 3m it was not possible.

Super nice hostel! Stayed there in my van for 3500 colones. you can use all their services. i camped on cocles beach later and they always let me shower there for 1000 colones. If you want to do laundry its €7. I really recommend this place! Super friendly staff and really nice people staying there

Rocking J's was the only place we could find to camp in our van within walking distance of Puerto Viejo. They have a huge area where you can pitch a tent or park a van; plenty of space when we visited in October. Staff friendly and bathrooms clean, free locker facilities if you want to go to the beach behind the bar (which has some surprisingly good snorkelling and shallow pools for a splash). $15 per van

Seemed like a party hostel. We stayed here in low season, so it was tranquillo. I think that the high season would bring too many people.

It’s a nice place to stay if you want to meet some people. It has a nice beach and is well located in Puerto Viejo. The campground itself is not at the beach, but quit big. They have a good service!

We have been at 7 campings in Costa Rica so far, and this one was our least favorite. It is a big backpackers hostel. The location was quite dirty, with a lot of garbage. The sanitary was ok, but I definetely would not recommend it if you want to camp at a beautiful place. We decided to move a bit more to the south to camping El Arrecife, where the athmosphere is much better, but good facilities are missing

Increased price to $14usd for camping for two. Did not like the spot. Too crowded, and way to exposed...

Very nice and cozy place. We paid 12USD for the 2 of us and the car. We parked near the toilets and got electricity from there. They offer volunteering if you want to stay for free. Definitely recommended

We did not stay here but we took a look around and went on to Punta Uva. It is a really huge place and you do not really have a possibility to plug in your car. The kitchen look ok, bathrooms and showers were clean and also looked okay. Price would have been 12$ for two people in a car.

We stayed here 2 nights. really great place. The flat ground is far enough from the main hostel its really quiet. The bathrooms are amazing. We were lucky to have a sloth come down 40 ft from our truck and crawl across the ground. Owner seemed nice enough.

We didn't stay here but I thought I would add my review. We stopped to check it out and wanted to camp with our motorcycles. It is a really big hostel with camping inside or outside. Restaurant and bar. The hostel is packed with noisy young people and the music can be heard from down the road till late in the night. Not really our scene. I was also told by some locals that there is a lot of theft here. Looks really nice though but too much partying and impersonal. Big rigs will fit into their huge parking right on the beach.
