Description

Slow going on Hwy 40 between Ibague and Calarca in both directions. We took 7+ hours for 75 km.
There is construction of bridges and tunnels, but for us the delays were caused by lots and lots of trucks who wait for each other to negotiate the countless turns. During lengthy complete stand-stills, we had plenty opportunity to talk with truckers. The consensus is that it is always a lottery driving here. Minimum time needed for this section is about three to four hours, but the road may be closed completely if there is an accident.
It’s prudent to be prepared with food and drink and a way to go potty, especially for women. When we were not at a stand-still, we usually crawled along in a convoy of trucks going both ways with few opportunities to pull off the road.

I'm deleting this app. I for one will not read what an adult says if they actually used the word potty in a actual sentence. I'm doing the opposite of whatever they did/say. Potty, like this is some sort of children's book.

We took 2:30h from Salento to Ibagué. Road is good, but it has lot curves and traffic.

Report Check-In

It took us 5 hours from Salento centre to Ibague. A lot of traffic, not much roadworks

Report Check-In

On a Friday afternoon we drove from Cajamarca (after doing the Salento-Toche road) to Armenia and the there was no construction, but it was slow at points because of trucks. Nothing out of the ordinary compared to any other mountainous road through Colombia.
The only thing that finally held us up in the end was a container truck that opted to roll over and hold up traffic on both sides for about 3 hours... hopefully that won’t happen to you!

Report Check-In

77km between Armenia and Cajamarca on a sunday : 7 hours. Hundreds and hundreds of trucks. If you hesitate with an other road, don't. Take the other.

Report Check-In

Took us about 4 hours from Ibagué to camping la sirena, It was on a Saturday. Apparently this is the worst day of the week because on Sunday trucks are forbidden on this road. If we knew this before, we had done this on Sunday. The road is still very busy then but obviously much better than any other day of the week.

Report Check-In

Drove this route on a Thursday. No construction delays. But the road is jammed with big trucks climbing and decelerating slowly. Just takes patience, good brakes and time.

Report Check-In

We do from Ibagué to Cajamarca and prefere to pass by Toche. A lot of trucks... but we are in dry season!

Report Check-In

We were told that construction would continue through 2019, so we went around using Route 50 through Manizales. This was great, no traffic at all, and we spent the night at the termales outside of Manizales. Why take this heavily used road unless you must.

Report Check-In

we did this road on our motos and I wouldn't want to do it in a car/van. we passed a 6km stand still due to a head on collision. then at the little town of cajamarca was another line of a few km, I could see how this would take 6hrs. it took us 3hr to go from Ibague to Armenia and all we did was pass trucks the whole time. the area where this is marked on the map wasn't bad just the rest was. good luck if you are not on 2 wheels!

Report Check-In

We drove from Armenia to Ibague on a Saturday afternoon. It took us 3 hours. No construction work but lots of trucks. Roads are wide enough to pass. However, be careful over taking big trucks crossing the double yellow line, as the police might wait around the corner ready to give you a ticket.

Report Check-In

We made this road on a Sunday.
Still a lot of traffic but we haven’t been stopped for roadworks. It took us around 3hours and half to go from Salento to Ibagué
