Description

Update: 23-12-2023, because of political dispute, only viewable with guide, see comments.

DON'T MISS IT - IT'S A REAL GEM!!!
Comparable to Palenque but less crowded (and not that much jungle).

A very well-kept archaeological site with impressive ruins and a small museum with some original artifacts (explanation in Spanish only). We didn't read about this place in our tour books, which is a shame.

A short walk from entrance to ruins. We climbed all the way up to the top and the whole tour took us about 1.5 hrs (but we are not young anymore and for sure you can spend more time). Guides available at entrance. Well worth the 12 km drive from MEX 186/199.

There is accommodation close by. Some vendors and comedores as well.

Open from 8am to 5pm.
Entrance fee 60 Pesos/person

You can only get to side of the temples with a guide as the political dispute is still not resolved. We paid 400 pesos in total for the two of us and the guide will take you through some farmlands and a little jungle to get to the low fences of the temples. So, you still get very close, just not inside. It beautiful and the guides are from the area and speak Mayan. We got lots of background information from the guide.

We arrived and were instructed that the site is closed for the time being as there is a conflict between land owners and the government.
We enjoyed the museum for free and there is a walking trail you can take with a guide to go see them from another mountain.
There is no end open date that the people there knew of

What a beautiful gem indeed! Go for it! <3

(Sadly camping is not allowed-anymore but next house is functioning perfectly)

Ah and we had a „rope toll“ on the way in- 2 km before the gate but we declined it to pay (no gracias) so they let us move…

Amazing archeological site, less crowded and not touristy and with much much more acceptable temperatures compared to Palenque.

You can really explore a lot on your own, without many restrictions.

If you come early in the morning, you practically have the place to yourself. Open from 8 to 5.

I one night camping (100pesos)
They have wifi and basic toilets and shower. It is the closest you can get to the ruins! The entrance is just 30 meter farther down the road. They have a small kitchen for the people in the cabanas and camping but quite far down by the restaurant.when I was unpacking I left my luggage on the ground and looking for a spot to put up the tent, I came back to the luggage and found a some toilet paper 🧻 on the ground, not only but my takeaway dinner was gone too. The dog took both out to the other side of the barbed wire fence and enjoyed them… why the toilet paper though?
Dog came back smiling. Really enjoyed my dinner.

Yes this is camping here. I had a good night sleep with the occasional dogs howling orchestra all stars around me. Woke up without breakfast and went to the ruins which were spectacular!
Well worth going to bed without dinner.

Beautiful ruins and site !
The park is manicured, the large pyramid hosting smaller ones very impressive, the tunnels we were allowed to walk in made the experience even greater, we had a blast and only questioned ourselves if walking on some parts of the ruins that seemed more fragile shouldn't be prohibited but being able to walk through so easily was just so wonderful! The expetience made me wanna learn much more about Tonina...
We couldn't get to the very top and missed a few levels (the pyramid has intricate and fascinating levels and half levels made of smaller pyramids), due to renovation work, and those who were able to climb these surely enjoyed both incredible discoveries as well as an outstanding view over the green region.

Don't miss it!
We came from Ocosingo and didn't not meet any road block.
The region is not all safe as told by locals themselves and we might not visit Chiapas as much as we would like to but Tonina was an incredible experience we won't forget.

We paid 70pesos per person and decided to rent a cabana right behind the entrance parking lot so we could leave our dog there. It worked out perfectly. We were received by Maribel and paid 350pesos for a cabin. We ended up taking a second night and will write a review when we leave.

There are different cabanas on the road before the entrance and a little restaurant passed the entrance gate.

Requires to climb steep sets of stairs unless you decide, and it still is worth the visit if you ask me, to sit and admire the ancient pyramid city from the main plaza.

Open again but only partial. You can see only the sport field. For us it's not enough. The 90% of the ruins is still closed cause covid, anyway the price is 65 pesos p.p. Museum also closed. The inhabitants and tourism guides are disgusted with those situation. Only there is Covid in the maya piramid? We are living a ilogic era...

Closed because of the pandemic :’( a local farmer has land close by, he offered we could go to his land for 500 pesos. We didnt

Wow! What a beautiful and interesting place. We liked the little museum and the breathtaking view from the top of the pyramid. It was a Thursday around 2p.m when we walked in- we didn't have to pay the entrance fee- just to sign in; we gave a donation for the Mexican Red Cross; we highly recommend this site and the nearby campsite with the cabanas!

Really great ruins and great little museum with statues and model of the place. Was awesome as you are allowed to go almost everywhere, even climb all the way to the top of the very steep pyramid on the highest platform. Best Maya ruins we have seen! Also great to see the stucco as found, the statues and Steele on site. Highly recommended. We didn’t have to pay entrance fee, only needed to sign up.

Really cool ruins set on a steep hill, and extra nice because they are so quiet. Only 5 other people here today which is apparently a public holiday. We got in for free, not sure why.

Amazing and beautiful ruins. As described. Arrived around 1500...a single police officer was at the office with a lady. We signed the entry book, had wallet in hand, and they stated no ticket? Not sure if this is the new norm?

BEAUTIFUL ruins and we were the only ones there at 8h30 on a Sunday morning. Entrance fee is 60P per person. We took a guide for 100P for the 4 of us. Totally recommend visiting those ruins.
