Another Forest Service campground. Nothing but restrooms and flat parking spots with fire rings. I am here off-season so the place was empty, the only noise being the cold train to drive by two or three times a night. Plus, it’s free! I had one bar of Verizon, and was able to make phone calls and text message. Nice quiet spot.

10 sites. We camped for 3 nights here in a 24 ft rv and it fit lovely. Still free and first come first serve, pit toilets, dumpster for trash, grill, picnic table, and fire pit, short walk to river. Some longer trailers had trouble fitting in spots but ultimately succeeded after about an hour of back and forth, and leveling. The train near by is not disturbing but kind of lulling, along with the sound of the river. Not far from a few great park trails.

Stopped here for the night. Designated spots with picnic table, BBQ, and fire pit. Pit toilets nearby. Short walk down to the river. Beautiful spot!

Report Check-In

Still free as of late May 2023. Confirmed on NPS site before arriving. 10 sites on a beautiful, small loop right by the river. Got my truck and Casita 17’ trailer there with no problems though the road down to the sites might be difficult for larger/wider trailers. Weak Verizon and AT&T. Nice place to chill for a couple days, but it is well off the main roads so it may not be your ideal spot for a quick overnighter/layover.

Stayed at Army Camp the previous night. This was more in the trees but some sites are close to one another. Nice area on the river to enjoy. 1 weak bar on Verizon and in our LTE. Working remote so not good with the tree canopy. Needed to move. Trains are loud but didn't bother me. None overnight

Great free spot, paid as of 2023. Road in is tight gravel with a few potholes, and some tight turns, but plenty of space to turn around at the end of it if you want to give it a try. was half full by the evening, nice open spots with picnic, fiee pit and grill.

Just a note on the blue Ford Fiesta. The guy is a very nice individual that I met today. My dog really liked him too. Carry on.

We stayed one night. There was only 3 sites taken, we had plenty of choice. Table and fire pit. Free campground that’s great. But the railroad is right across the river so you can hear every train passing by, even at night. Besides that, nice place very simple and quiet. No amenities but pit toilets.

Wow. Overlanding at its finest. 100 yards to the sand bar of the New River gorge. FCFS until 2023 then will be on Recreation.gov. Beautiful West Virginia! Lots of firewood around each campsite. Each site has fire ring and bbq. Beautiful location and at the incredible price. TREVELN!

Nice place, stayed here 2 nights.

Sunday afternoon there was a shady guy in a blue Ford Fiesta. Drove there twice and checked all the campgrounds tents and RVs - maybe a thief? He left, because we watched him.

Report Check-In

We have been here for about 6 days, and it's been great.

However, we just spoke to a Park Ranger and was told that this campground is moving to RECREATION.GOV. It will no longer be a FCFS site. Check the website before you make the trek down here thinking you'll get a site. We were also told that Army Camp is staying FCFS* for now.

Report Check-In

Great spot for free camping and it was pretty quiet with the exception of the trains but other than that we will come here again.

Report Check-In

Free campsites first come first serve in a beautiful spot on the New River. Part of New River Gorge National Park. Very active rail line across the River with several long trains coming through overnight. Walk-in sites are in sight of vehicle and not far to walk. Hammocks trees available. Pit toilets. Weeknights in April the walk-in sites weren’t full. We had the spot all to ourselves on Wednesday night. 2 other groups were there on Tuesday night.

Report Check-In

Free established campsite by the river. A dozen drive in sites and really nice walk in sites with fire ring and picnic table. Almost no cell service (1 bar ATT and Verizon). Watched the sunset on the boat ramp, which was nice. Almost full when we were there in late October. It is a short 1 mile walk up the road to the little Laurel trailhead which takes you to grandview rim trail and the overlooks.

We ended up leaving after 1 night because the pit toilets smelled so bad (we’ve used many in our lives and these were the worst of the worst). It was unbearable and lingered into our camp which was pretty far away.

Report Check-In

Nice spot just above the river (unless you choose walk in tent sites on the river). NO phone service, water of electric. Pit toilets. Quiet except for the occasional train passing.

I so appreciate free campsites like this! It looks like New River Gorge NP has quite a few sites along the river. All the spots here were taken when I arrived, so I parked overnight in the boat ramp spots without an issue (2 other vans did too - so I was in good company!)
No cell service (Verizon). Pit toilets though - what a luxury!
Would definitely stay again!

Report Check-In

nice little free campground. the sites are all very close to the river so great views. no hookups but they have pit toilets. there are 10 rv pull in spots for small to medium rvs. definitely would not recommend parking here with a rig longer than 35. the access road is gravel and sturdy but there is one hairpin turn in it that will be difficult or impossible for big rigs. ours is 28 and we made it. we went in march and the pace was nearly empty. all in all very nice and I would stay again.

Report Check-In

Free campsites with table, fire pits, grills and bathroom building with pit toilets and river access. Sites are close together but nice quiet spot to stop along a road trip. Full by 5pm Friday night.

Report Check-In

Nice wooded free campsite, the pit toilets are a walk and traffic can be heavy due to a boat ramp being down same road. All in all it was a nice place to stay.
