Before to go there we have been to "Presidentia Municipal" near the church. After an hour's wait, we had an "audience". After deliberation they accepted that we spent the night there. They made a copy of our ID, and asked that we come back the next day at 9 AM. Around 9:30 PM, the police came to see us, when we told them that we had had the agreement of the municipal council, they left. The next day at 9 AM. we returned to the "Presidentia Municipal" to say that we were leaving, they asked us for a donation...

In short, a beautiful spot to sleep, very quiet and surrounded by mountains but a crazy process and an ask for a donation ...

Spent two nights here as spent day at Yagul Ruins and at Tlacolula Sunday market. Second day I. Town getting weaving, wool making and dying displays. Very fascinating and impressive work all through this town.
People checking in on us because they are friendly and on night two, the cops stopped in a couple times.
So nice, tried to check in but station was closed and still no problem. Hiked El Pisacho from camp as well.
Lovely area and bugs weren’t bad at all.
Recommend this town, the street food in local market and the amazing crafts.

That is actually a great spot. We slept here a night. Couldn't find the police station so we decided just to go there. The lake is dry but you have a great view on the mountains around the lake. The police came at night. Explained that you have to register because the place can be dangerous (it has to do with the quality of the soil so be careful where you park). They told us we actually have to pay something to stay there for the permit. They took our personal information and then went away and came during the night to patrol. We had to go to the police station the following day (that you can find on the Plaza next to the church, it also has free wifi). The men we met explained why you have to do the permit but did not charge us anything, just asked that if we come back, we tell them first. I highly recommend coming to this place as the village is just beautiful and you can buy some artisanal products (tapestries, rugs and ponchos). If you want, you can hike in the mountains but you have to pay a fee to a tourist thing. We tried to go there but it was closed (next to the place you sleep).

Wonderful free spot! Checked in with the police, came to the “lake” (it’s empty) and had a super quiet, safe night. There are a few relatively flat spots to choose from. No cell signal.

Very beautiful and quite. Also good for little hikes around. If you want to stay you have to go to the municipio (17.029624, -96.519055) in the pueblo for let them know that you are staying at the lake for the night. They just want to know who you are and you don‘t habe to pay anything.

We spent 2 nights at this spot. Beautiful and quiet. Many animals around during the day. Cows, donkeys, goats, dogs. Beautiful view on the mountains. The police came by both days around 9 or 10pm. They strongly suggested to go to the police station to register before going to the spot. They prefer to know beforehand the people and vehicles than checking on a "suspicious car". They were friendly and understanding. The second day, we went for a walk and we saw a big rattle snake couple of kms from the spot. It rattled and went away when it saw us. No problem but it's good to know there may be snakes around.

I drove out to the lake and it was bone dry and the hills are nice but no trees really and also very dry. Probably nicer once the rains have a chance to refill the lake and green up the area.

There are a few camping spots around this small lake, not all completely level but picturesque and quiet during the night. The kind men in the tourist office in town let us use their area by the little house on the opposite bank with toilet and shower for free (travelling by bicycle) but some other overlanders in rigs were charged 100 pesos per truck. I'm sure future guests would be welcome if they have no tour groups there for the night but best to clarify any fee beforehand!

Indeed a very quiet night which was only disturbed by a visit of two friendly police officers. They checked our passports and asked the typical questions. It is ok to stay here overnight, but they advised to register at the municipality of Teotitlan before and ask for permission. The advantage: enhanced safety as the police will patrol more often outside of town.

Note: rigs can pass, but there is a bridge with a sharp turn to the right. We have a wheel base of 4,2 m and managed the turn. Vehicles with a larger wheel base might have problems to pass.
