Description

Great free spot on BLM land south of Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge. It is up a hill off the road (turn at approximately 34.2238062, -106.9424321 to go uphill to the spot) leading to San Lorenzo Canyon. As you go up the hill you will see a few fire rings, but the best site is at the top. Beautiful view and very private, only saw a few other campers while we were here and they were miles away. Great data signal! There is an unmarked trail leading from the site over the hills. We followed it until it petered out. I don't think big rigs could get up this hill, but if you follow other spur roads from that main road that leads to San Lorenzo Canyon, you can find lots of other sites. The Canyon is maybe a 3-mile walk from this site.

Very exposed to the wind, so went a little further up the road and stayed at one of the spur roads. No services anywhere. Slow cell signal in some spots. Very quiet.

Perfect spot, nice 360 view and Google map brought us here without issue with our 2WD Promaster

See info below on how to get here. Nicely graded road takes you up a hill. Nice quiet spot with a great view.

DO NOT USE GOOGLE MAPS!
It sends you up a really sketch gravel sand road that unless you have 12 inch clearance you will get stuck! Google maps will tell you to turn left after you go through the very narrow underpass under I25. Do not! Turn right instead and you will see a smooth road heading up hill with signs to a canyon. This is the road you take. I'm going to get rid of Google maps. Like this is at least a dozen times it has led me astray!

Great place for the night or several days.
3 bar’s Verizon. Can talk and text. Someone already had the spot I wanted but there was another spot about 300 yds further west. I hope they didn’t mind.
You can hear slight road noise from I-25.
I’m here with my TC and toad. Had to unhook to turn around.
There is a 14’4” narrow tunnel coming over here too. One might be able to bypass it?

Beautiful place for sunrise and sunsets! Roads were pretty easy. There are at least 3-4 fire rings up on the hill. We took the first one (near the dead cow- yes it’s still there!) so I think folks don’t realize there are more spots further down the road.

We walked through the canyon and lots of folks camping in there as well. As long as there is no rain - there are some sweet spots there too.

Great quiet spot. Stayed for 1 night. As others have mentioned, there was a dead cow. Seems to be a common occurrence (which made it less creepy I guess)

No other campers. Just an occasional car heading down a parallel dirt road. Possibly to the canyon? Not sure.

Good signal.

Great spot! Easy to get to with 2WD. The spot on the hill was surprisingly cleaner than we expected based on previous reviews. Once you turn left onto the road to get here there are probably 3-4 other spots along the way but the best spot is the last one! Good Verizon reception too!

Nice area, great view 2 to 3 bars 5g cell service

Got the place to myself! Definitely input coordinates from the original poster for the best route to the top. First hill is a doozy but the rest was easy in my 2WD, low clearance prius.

Report Check-In

Very quiet spot with excellent 360 degree views. Made it here easily in 6 window skoolie. Great cell service, a bit windy.

Report Check-In

This is out second time here. Used map.me and the directions were far better than those offered by google maps the previous time. Beautiful spot. Quiet. Minimal washboard. (There is still a dead cow near the OP coordinates.)

Report Check-In

nice spot. there were a couple other vans and rvs along the road, but there are so many spots available (and far apart) that it feels pretty solitary. i chose a large spot closer to the highway and did not regret it. only saw a couple cars drive by and highway noise died down by 8 or 9. I did see a LOT of tp scattered theoughout the brush. remember to pack out all tp and trash to keep these sites clean!

Report Check-In

We did not stay at these exact coordinates as someone else was there, so we turned around and parked a bit down the road where there was a drive to park. We had intended to stay only a few days but ended up being there for a week. Lots of land to explore. It was quite and we had cell/hot spot service. The roads are very washboarded out, but we went slow and we're fine!

Report Check-In

Beautiful spot! We felt very safe. There was indeed a bunch of dead cows but that was just one of a couple spots. Just drive up the hill or further the other road to the canyon. Cool area. Watch out for scorpions

Report Check-In

Really windy last night so we're going to move to a lower spot tonite. Also someone dumped a couple dead cows on the side of the hill, so there's that now. Sometimes people just suck. That's trash I'm not picking up!

So glad we found this spot because of this app. We are currently up on the hill. It is very clean, windy, and an incredible sunset. So quiet; we saw two other sites taken on the way in but they are so far away we can’t see anyone from here. It’s a treasure. No problems getting in on a MR transit RWD full of our stuff. Bring firewood and whatever you need for a couple days.

I am so glad we found this spot because of this app! Currently up on the hill; we have only seen two other campers that are completely out of sight. It’s gorgeous, clean, windy, and amazing sunsets. No problem with a mid roof transit RWD full of our life haha. Cant wait to explore tomorrow.

pros: great desert free camping! beautiful scenery and pretty quiet overall!

cons: very popular spot for locals I presume to come and hangout. we saw close to 15 Cars passing by during our 2 day stay.

honestly we drove in less than a mile with our 24ft rv and found a nice even spot. there's a lot of different dirt roads so honestly just find one that you think your rig can take and you can find a little spot there.

another note, our 2nd night, a car parked on a hill from where we were and stayed there for a bit. my husband looked through his binoculars at them and they waved. there was no way they could have seen us from that far inside the rv. so we presume they were watching us. they were being a bit sketchy and mischievous, but left after we saw them.

just be wary and always be observant!

Good Verizon signal. The ground is pretty uneven so it might take a long time to get level. There’s a nice animal trail along the ridge line. Nice and quiet. When I was there the wind was fierce, and I had to turn my vehicle toward the wind to prevent rocking.

Report Check-In

Dirt/forest roads, but no issues getting here in my 2WD non-high clearance Promaster. Quiet, dark (great stars), but can still faintly see civilization.

Report Check-In

Great spot! It was windy while we were there, so we opted to sleep in the car rather than put up a tent. Either way, it was nice and quiet, and EXTREMELY dark. The night sky was epic.

Report Check-In

Stayed here one night. Only one car passed the road down below that night, super quiet and remote. Fire ring and a couple pull-outs on top of the hill. Beautiful view of the sunset. 2-4 bars LTE with T-Mobile. A few spots on the gravel road in, as well.

Report Check-In

Stayed here for four nights. Nothing special in the way of views (just your regular desert vibes), but private, clean, and free. A few cars drove by on the main road, but we didn't see any other campers, only copious amounts of moths... like SO MANY moths. FYI: There is a narrow 14 ft tunnel you have to drive through to get here so tall rigs might not fit.

### San Lorenzo Canyon - Oct 11, 2019
I stayed on the hill by original coordinates. Sweet spot, good TMobile, nice views, and my 21-ft Toyota camper had no problem getting here. Super quiet, especially during the week. If you keep driving past this campsite to the mouth of the canyon and beyond there are some nice camp spots by the rock formations (I had no cell service over the hill). The road was in great shape when I was here, though wet weather would be a different story. I hiked up the road and did a loop going up through the canyon and around the top. Cool hike!

One of my favorite spots in New Mexico so far. Road is mostly washboard which is annoying but fine to drive with 2wd. Drove to the trailhead sign but sand started getting deeper and I lost cell signal, as someone who needs to work, I headed back up to slightly higher elevation. Found a beautiful spot slightly before the hill with views and awesome cell service. Small bit of broken glass and bullet casing/shotgun shells, which I picked up. A little bit of traffic up/down the dirt road but nothing of bother. Incredibly dark.

Excellent find. All by ourselves with beautiful sunrise and sunset.
