Latest Check-Ins

We tried to cross border from Tanzania to Kenia with EU passport and SA registered car. Apply for a e visa a week before by use of a computer not by a phone it's 35 USD pp. At the border a fixer can do it for 20USD pp fee.
They did't want to give an East-Africa visa. At this border Customs doesn't allow you to crossborder with a SA registered car without CDP despite you want to pay 500USD to a fixer. We didn't crossborder

Report Check-In

This border crossing is in 1 building on the Tanzanian side. Unfortunately the Kenyan officials were all in lunch when we arrived and we waited for quite some time. Eventually the Tanzanian officials stamped us out of Kenya and into Tanzania. Then the customs officials were also in lunch. Well, 3 hours later we got through, but it was very frustrating.

As of May 2023 This is now a one stop border, everything done on the Tanzanian side in one building. Best border crossing I’ve had. Very quick and efficient, bank inside building. All done in 40 minutes with carnet. A few touts/fixers around but you absolutely don’t need them

one stop border again, coming from Tanzania it was at the Kenyan side.
We had a EATV from Rwanda, and it was no problem coming from Tanzania to re-enter with this Visa.
There is an ATM and a bank directly at the border, where you can pay the road tax.
Insurance sellers got on our nerves with a much too high price. When we left without taking one, we were stopped by a "police man" without uniform who was not able to identify himself. We left him standing there.
Safaricom Service Center for SIM cards after the border on the left. They guy under the umbrella did everything for us.

Report Check-In

Easy border, not a one stop, took us 45 minutes on the Tanzania side to exit and 38 minutes on the Kenya side.

It is a bit hard to find the building on the Tanzania side and they wanted a lot of useless papers. Very friendly help from tax lady who stamped out TIP and Carnet while we were doing the immigration forms.

Fixers on the Kenya side but there is not much for them to do. Roadtax in Kenya can only be payed with Mpesa so you need to have that or ask someone. There is an ATM next to the immigration building.

Not a one stop border over the Christmas holidays, however everyone is really helpful and the process is very straightforward. Took about 1 hour to clear with Kenyan registered car.

Kenia to Tansania

Kenia side easy, took about 10 Minutes to get out.

Tansania side was took a lot longer. We needed a transit visa. The first guy almost let us pass with no visa until we explained what we needed. The second one took about 10 Minutes. It now says 14 days although only 7 are officially allowed.

Then began the real struggle. First it was hard to find someone to even help with the Carnet. The filling out took over an Hour with the guy being very friendly, but also very confused about almost everything. No hassle but just plan accordingly for time.

Crossing the Kenya border without a Carnet (and fixer contact info):

On our Cape 2 Cairo trip, my travel mate and I kept hearing the whole way from South Africa... "You'll never get your car into Kenya without a Carnet."

Well... we got into Kenya in what was one of the simplest crossings of the trip. Here's how:

First off!!! This is a HUGE piece of info everyone regurgitating that information leaves out... If you have a EUROPEAN registered vehicle OR a vehicle registered OUTSIDE the SADC or COMESA... THEN... you will probably have a difficult time getting your vehicle across the border.

Here is the Kenyan law regarding a Temporary Importation Permit for a vehicle (I had this printed out when we showed up at the border in case we got an agent that wasn't familiar with it):

https://newsblaze.co.ke/how-to-apply-for-temporary-importation-of-private-motor-vehicles-and-foreign-vehicle-permits-plus-all-requirements/#:~:text=A%20free%20fourteen%20day%20temporary,C32%20and%20a%20Foreign%20Permit.

They give you a 14 day TIP on a form C32. No cost, no road tax. You can go somewhere in Nairobi and extend it to 30 days (ask at border where, we did not extend).

Ideally you will have the C32 Form they gave you in Tanzania and can continue using it in Kenya (DONT LET THEM KEEP THE ORIGINAL, FIGHT FOR IT BACK) You need the entry/exit stamps.

NOTE: We used the Isibania border. It was a very chill smaller border. That might make a difference.

Warning: make sure you do an e-visa online (takes 30 min to process) instead of paying cash for visa on arrival. The immigration officers gave us a fake receipt and stamp in the passport but we found out later when we wanted to exit Kenya that the visa was not valid!
Other things are as described below

Report Check-In

Border post with Tanzania. (Location of this border was incorrectly located inside park). Received East Africa Tourist visa here and paid with US$ 100 per visa. Stamped Carnet and checked out at gate. Out of Tanzania and into Kenya 1 1/2 hours. Some waiting involved, but very easy.
