Description

Nice, quiet place to camp in the trees. We accessed it in a 2WD Sprinter van. 4G service is fast (Verizon). Good view of the mountains.

Camping is closed here but open 2 miles down the road

Report Check-In

Almost immediately after you pass the entrance to Shady Rest Park, Sawmill Cutoff turns to gravel and you soon discover a network of Forest Service roads crisscrossing in many directions. There are many (easy access) options for wild camping in obvious locations along most of these roads. However if you continue ~ .9 miles to this location... you are on the side of a ridge that affords a beautiful view of the Sierra's looking South (and is always beautifully lit by the sun in the morning). See panoramic photo.

closed to overnight camping for the winter

Quiet, only one other hippie was here. Beautiful views at sunrise. A tad cold but so it goes.

Super sick spot! Awesome views and was the only one there. There was one sketchy divot in the road but my econoline-250 made it just fine:-)

Nice spot right outside of town. Front wheel drive pro master was fine. I would be careful if there was snow or it rained a lot. Seemed like a good place to
Get stuck in the mud.

Great Spot. Had it all to ourselves. be careful coming in - just before you reach the spot there is a deep rut on the right side of the road. Made it fine in our 2WD Sprinter Van.

We went up to the spot with the views. A few kids bombing around on bicycles, screaming down the trails. They left when it got dark. More people showed up around 7 AM going for an early morning bike ride. It’s very close to town. Otherwise nice spot.

I drove a little bit further on the road past the Google GPS coordinates that populated because I wanted to find a spot with Mountain View’s. I had drove around some of the other roads and didn’t find views until I drove further down the road that Google brings you down. Anyway, there is a big rut in the road if you continue on 3S96. My Ford Transit 350 XLT bottomed our coming over it with not a lot of room to go at an angle. The roads getting in here otherwise we’re pretty nice sort/gravel. Drove pretty smoothly.

The views are very pretty though. It was very quiet and I only saw one truck come out for a little bit to mountain bike (Saturday evening). I have decent Verizon LTE on my phone and was able to work/stream with a Verizon hot spot with and without antenna with 3-4 bars. I posted a photo of this spot.

Awesome place to stay! Quiet! Easy to get to if you’re in a van or truck camper, bigger rigs would be better suited towards the front. We got to our spot in a 74 VW Westy.

Report Check-In

We stayed one night here. You could probably stay many. After you pass the rest area, you enter a dirt road. There is a sign for free camping (I took a photo).
We didn’t stay as far up as this spot you clicked on as there are many places to pull into before then.
Traffic is light (2 trail bikes, a few bicycles and a handful of cars).
The deeper you go I’m guessing the more private.

Report Check-In

Pulled in super late at night and found a secluded spot. Quiet, clean, beautiful. Easy to get to in a higher clearance vehicle, 2wd is fine, finger trails off the main dirt road are rutted and off camber but not bad.
