Latest Check-Ins

Non existent. Didn't see any sign of a barrier or collection point.

Report Check-In

They asked us to pay 2,000 kwacha to help them. When i told them these are not official costs (based ik this messages) they admitted and they asked us if we could pay them, but that it was not obligated. So you don’t need to pay if you don’t want to.

Report Check-In

Just passed, no council fees anymore. Nobody to ask for anything

Report Check-In

We did not have to pay any fees here. The barrier was open.

Report Check-In

There are a big construction site at the moment. We saw no stop.

Report Check-In

Barrier was lifted for us. No payment. No trouble.

Report Check-In

Tanzania to Malawi. Nobody stopped us. Just lifted the boomgates as we approached.

Report Check-In

The gate was open, since a local was just passing. We floored it and got through easily. Some people yelled and followed us for 5 meters. No real hassle. They’ve extended the barrier, so passing it was no option.

Report Check-In

not possible to get our Landrover discovery around the barrier. we told them it was illegal and would get police if they didn't open the barrier immediately. they opened it. :)

Report Check-In

We passed a boom at a slightly different location than listed here; Immediately after customs in front of the bank where you pay the road tax coming into Tanzania.

We showed our Carnet and were waved through.

Report Check-In

We crossed the border from Malawi to Tansania.
The self made gate comes when you want to leave the custom area.
They wanted 10.000 TSH but we said "no" and asked for his official license or document, which he didn't have, of course, because this fee is absolutely illegal and you all should not pay this cheating.
There was a loud discussion until a officer from the custom came and said, that we don't have to pay this because it is not an official fee.
We tourists should not support this illegal cheating!

Report Check-In

It feels like a proper scam that makes someone really reach. Neither computer nor actual tracking.
We passed this gate today for second time. First one was 6 months ago from Malawi to Tanzania and now the opposite way. WE DIDN'T PAY ANYTHING in both of the times.
They of course tried to get the money from us but we made it clear we won't pay it and that we have to cross the border. it took 3 minutes each time.

*** Don't exchange money with people around this gate. They are a bunch of 20-30 scammers tgat don't hesitate to steal.
On the first time I did a mistake and tried to make a deal and many of them were around making it very messy.
when I counted the money I noticed he gave me only half of the amount. when I told him to give me the second half (50$ approx) He just laughted and went away.

We went to the police, report it and then they helped us to get the money back.
they were really nice, helpful and professional.

Report Check-In

Passed it on a Sunday morning.
Coming from Tanzania the "roadblock" is just in front of the gate of the customs office.

The cross pole it a bit short, leaving just enough space for our LandCruiser to just pass. They were not happy, but no stones where thrown or anything else. They did come after us telling we have to pay, but we just said no and walked into the customs office.

Report Check-In

nobody asked for this fee when I passed. Malawi to Tansania.

Report Check-In

We just ignored all the people waving hands and drove through! There was enough space for our Landrover Defender getting through the self made gate. One person came and said we have to pay council fee...we just ignored and went to immigration and custom (coming from Tanzania, going to Malawi)
We meet two motorbikers that did the same from other side!
Once you reach the official border it seems that they can not do anything!!!

Report Check-In

You can try to follow the car in front of you when it’s passing the gate. Locals pay 5.000, muzungu’s pay 10.000.If you try hard you will make it without paying. If that’s worth it...

Report Check-In

Yep, still have to pay 10k. Two tz cars before us didn’t have to pay. We really tried hard not to pay but they just wont let you pass to the border.

Report Check-In

If leaving from Malawi to Tanzania 10,000 shillings per vehicle will be demanded by some locals operating a gate. Guys were rude, some drunk, and there was no room for negotiation, they escalated the situation when I initially refused and asked to see their government ID. This is a known scam acknowledged but ignored by the authorities. They only charge foreigners and have purchased a ticket machine to make it seem more official. Just pay the 10,000 it’s not worth the effort. It ruins ones first impression into Tanzania but it gets better.

Report Check-In

we got a recipt for the TSh 10000 we paid but we still think it is a complete rip-off

Report Check-In

Guess what it is now 10.000 TSH. So save some shillings for that council fee. We wanted to get a receipt, of course they don’t give one.... 😄😄

Report Check-In

Warning: the town wants you to pay 5000 shillings for using their village to go to the border. You can't access the border without paying. You can use the tar road that was built by the government. had an argument with the guy but did not help.
