Kenya
The place is originally a desert museum, but they have added some cottages etc for accommodation. Possible also to camp. Cottages: 1.500 KES pr night single. Double 2.000 KES per night. No restaurant etc. Very nice area with a fantastic view of Lake Turkana. The museum is located approx 5 km north of Loiengalani. Can be very windy during the night.
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
Camped in a shaded area that was supposed to offer protection from the relentless wind…wasnt effective much.
Pleasant swim in the lake and awesome sunset.
Water supply was interrupted by the recent rains so carry your own supply just in case it hasn’t been sorted.
Camping fees ksh1000 pp. you can also visit the museum for some cultural knowledge.
bungalows look nice, didn't ask for camping but visited the museum, which was worth it. Warden doesn't speak English.
Report Check-InThere is no shade here and as it was 43 degrees, we went elsewhere. There was a security chap on arrival but neither he nor anyone around could speak English, our Swahili unfortunately was not good enough to talk about camping.
Report Check-InAwesome location on a peninsula jutting out into the lake. We decided to stay here as opposed to in town as views are breathtaking! Simple bandas with en suite bathroom (cold shower) - perfect to hide away from the wind. There is also a little kitchen area to use. Laura is amazing host! We even swam below the bandas! Lovely place to stay.
Report Check-InWe spent a wonderful, but windy and hot, two nights here. View is amazing. Lauwra(?) the very nice lady who works there took us for a very interesting visit to the nearby El Molo village. And Andrew, the manager, spent an hour talking us through the museum exhibits.
Camping 500 KES pppn
Muesum 500 KES pp
Village tour 1500 KES pp
Very nice place. You stand in front of the museum with a clear view. Very windy (luckily) there is also very hot. We stood 4 days here.
Report Check-InGreat location with an excellent view of the lake. Camping is possible at 500ksh per tent. Cottages available from 1500ksh. The swimming pool wasn’t working during our visit unfortunately. You can camp inside a hall to help with the strong winds.
Report Check-InPerfect place to wind down and recover from the journey getting here! Alex the co-manager of the museum made us feel welcome. He is originally from El Moro 2km further along the lake. He personally showed me round the museum explaining everything and answering questions. For this reason alone it as worth 500 shillingies. Initially asked 1000 pppn for camping...but very quickly agreed to the 500 paid by previous visitors! There was running water in the toilets and tap but not shower. Sadly the pool was empty but there is a lovely place to swim down by the lake. Stunning sunset. Bring your own food!
Report Check-InWe camped here, nice views indeed. Camping is 500 ksh pp, we could pay with 10 usd which was nice since we don’t have shilling yet.
Quiet but very windy. The watchman knows the best spot to stay out of the wind, so just ask him.
We were told the gate closes around 5 and you have to be inside by then.
Report Check-InThe bandas look lovely and we are told they are ensuite too. Awesome view and very attractive looking swimming pool! We were very disappointed that we’d already committed to staying elsewhere, otherwise we would certainly have booked in for 2,000KES a room!
Desert Museum is also well worth a visit. 500KES per non-resident adult. Full of artefacts and information about the local tribes.
