Something not right?

Description

Base for the climb of Perote volcano. Nice area with several palapas and fireplaces. The bathrooms were quite dirty. Normally, you will probably have to pay for the night. But when we were there it was deserted and no one came by to collect the fees.

Latest Check-Ins

We arrived here on Sunday morning, intending to climb Cofre de Perote, but seeing it was cloudy we decided to climb the next day. We asked to stay 1 night in our van and he offered us a price of 150 pesos (reasoning we’d be using the bathroom 2 full days), we negotiated to 100 pesos (reasoning we’d be climbing on day 2 and thus not using the bathroom) and he accepted. The bathrooms were opened for us and were really clean actually. Simple, but clean. We decided to stay an extra night in the end, again 100 pesos. Price is per vehicle I believe (not per person?). That proves how clean the bathrooms were: the boy cleaned them again early in the morning. I guess that’s done everyday.
Cabins looked very cute and have hot water, but we didn’t ask about the prices of that.

Very beautiful and peaceful place, would really recommend. Safe and you can climb Cofre de Perote from the campsite!

Found the groundskeeper, who opened the ladies (not so clean) bathrooms for us. Paid 100 MXN for one night for a car with a rooftop tent and two people.

The last 4 kms are uneven cobblestone and the signage for that last turn is missing. Great views, if the weather allows it.

Note the altitude: come only if you are acclimated.

Well, as soon as I got there very eager hombre shook my hand and asked for 100pesos for 1 person camping/sleeping in my car (15ft long minivan). Offered two places to park it , both heavily sloping, one having High Voltage wires right over the head.

Needless to say, I promptly left because I was not impressed either with pricing and/or offered spots......and the padlock hanging on the bathroom door was just a bonus.

Continuing up the hill (entering National Park) requires sturdy car. There are numerous designated parking spots, without any indication that overnight stay/parking would be prohibited.

I have entered different spot (I stayed in) under separate listing in iOverlander database.

We stayed two nights for $200p (2 people). No hookups. We asked for bathrooms, but they never unlocked them. Palapa was nice touch, but for free we should have gone up the road a bit. Beware of low wires here.

Camping fee is 150.- for 2 people in a car. Probabely negociable. Camp was even on a fiesta weekens deserted. Looks nice. We went in to peak Cofre de Perote. (see: panoramic wild camp at 4174 m.a.s.l)
