Also a very different experience from moaning myrtle. We stayed inside the park and were able to enter at 5:45 AM. The only people arriving before us at Deadvlei and Big Daddy were the ones paying big dollars in the lodges. There are so many dunes that you can find one for yourself to enjoy without other people if you just go early. In summer months definitely go early, because from 9AM you are just burning away.

Just before deadvlei, to the right, there is a smaller, similar vlei. We had that one to ourselves with 2 oryx passing by. Walked around on different dunes and saw the oryxes again. It was magical.

PS: Shuttle is already operational at 5.45 AM. We were hesitant because all the cars driving around us went to Dune 45, but you can continue straight to Big Daddy even if you are unsure about doing the last 5 km yourself or taking the shuttle.

Very different experience to the moaning mertyl before! The staff at the gates were friendly and very helpful with chatting with some of the drivers to give us (bikers) a ride in. We stayed outside the park, entered when the gate opened at 6:15. It was BEAUTIFUL! Not so many people after the Christmas/new years season. Temperatures very high however so limited the number of dunes we could climb. We got a lift to the car park and took the "shuttle" (N$180) which is actually a 4x4 cruiser, that was also really fun to be driven by experts on the sand. We went straight to big daddy and deadvlei. There were people there but there is so much space to share and still feels like you're having a special experience. We would say definitely don't miss this!

Very unfriendly person at the gate but whatever. Beautiful area but loads and loads of tourists over there... Big daddy was packed with hundreds of people. This park is quite upseting cause there is no good way to really enjoy it. You cant enter the park before sunrise and then you still have around 1 hour of driving until the dunes + another 45 min of climbing. So you are up there quite late in the day already.
In our opinion there is more relax (and more beautiful) places to see the dunes in Namibia, especially for overlanders how are not used to be surounded by tourists. If you have a chance, check out Sandwich Harbour nearby Walvis Bay : completly different feeling.
Sossuvlei feels like a NWR cash machine and you dont get much for your money...

If your are traveling on a motorbike you are not allowed in to the park. To arrange a relatively cheap ride there and back call ‘Uncle P’ he manages the shuttle service that runs across the last 5km in the Dunes. But he can organize for you to be picked up at the NWA campsite. His number is 0813037196. Costed me N$600 to the dunes and back.

150 per foreign adults and 50 per car. Worth the visit. You can sleep outsidd and come as day visitors, ask the day before the opening and closing gate hours ;-)

Big daddy dune takes about 3 hours return. Steep incline to the top and then somewhat fun descent. Price 350 for 2 people and car

Report Check-In

The price increases to 350$ for 2 person and one car (day visitors). For that money you can drive 60km paved road to the dunes and then very sandy track (only 4x4).
I found it very expensive for what you get.

The transfer at the last 3.5km with loose sand is ND170 per person, only 4 cars driving up and down so with hundreds of people it came close to some fighting. Very poorly managed so drive it yourself. And for those who rent a 4x4 and have no clue; lower your tyre pressure to 1.2-1.5 bar and engage high range 4 wheel drive and you’ll cruise through.

Same above! Take care at the end of the pavef road, they asked us 170 pp one way and return for Big Daddy dune and deadvlei (they are together). So we consider it was a big scam!! Better go first to the little white container/office anw2wwwwwwd pay them. Also u can go by walking but so hoooot!!
