Latest Check-Ins

great place to Boondock. lots of dispersed camping areas right on the water. sand/gravel road about 4 miles long with spots all along. In March some ruts but doable in 2wd. if it's wet, you may have to stay an extra day for road to dry.

Report Check-In

Just spent 6 nights here and loved it. Beautiful water views on 3 sides. There is a Phillips 66 gas station about 4 miles down 191 that has a water spigot on the outside of the building and they let me fill up my 5 gallon jugs. It's also a convenience store with milk. beer. etc

Report Check-In

why in the world would you camp here when the other side has no cow poop and a real Beach.

Report Check-In

Irregular shoreline allows for many beachside Camping sites. Near the end of fr319 is a large flat area with many rock made fire pits where I’m camped. It’s quiet, beautiful with plenty of room for anything you need.
The Pronghorns and other wildlife are plentiful, just watch out for the cactus if you stray off the path. Weather has been unpredictable with some winds up to 30 mph and rain lasting several hours at times.

Report Check-In

Lots of tent camping, RVs, boats, in the area. Level areas to park next to lake, fire pits, & lots of space. Decent cell reception.

Name: Jug Hallow Dispersed Camping

Cost: $0

Elevation: 6000

Location: Ashley National Forest, North East Utah
Note: The entire peninsula is noted as Antelope Flats on maps with Jug Hallow as the road. Do not mix it up with the small Antelope Flats Campground ($20 per night) to the South. https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/231897

Site type(s): Boondocking - Tents, vans, RVs, it’s all good. This is dispersed/dry camping with NO hookups, no pit toilets, no picnic tables or other indulgences. There are stone firing rings scattered about.

If your are in a larger rig I recommend searching ahead if you want to camp further out on the peninsula (past the map’s blue line). Make sure current road conditions and turnarounds are adequate for your needs.

Human nature causes most of us to want to score that furthest coveted campsite way out on the tip of the peninsula, but it is really not necessary. There is waterside access everywhere.

Best features: The sunsets in the gorge are jaw dropping. Nonetheless, the water rules the day. I found my area (1/2 way out the peninsula on the North side) was clear enough for snorkeling along the tall cliffs across the waterway from camp and perfect for paddling. Kayak/canoe out to other areas for hiking. In August swimming was cool, but worth getting use to.

Open up the RV curtains or unzip the tent door quietly in the morning and watch for grazing antelope. Also, watch the water for an occasional peak at an otter.

Worst features: The four miles long gravel Jug Hallow road heading out onto the peninsula is long and straight (most the way), but has washboards. It is slow going. Try to arrive with all the supplies your rig needs for the entire stay. If you venture e out the small town of Dutch John is close by, offering a large convenience store with adjacent RV park. Propane and tank are dumping available.

Reading other reviews of the area I have seen people mention issues with generators, high winds at night and ‘no space’. Given the large area involved it’s hard to imagine running out of space. I has camped here for several weeks in August 2020 and had no issues with generators at night. Winds came uo two afternoons and blew through the night. Still, I noted that even campers who mentioned this issue gave Jug Hallow 4-5 star ratings. It’s just that good.

That said, there are several other boondoking sites around the gorge if your don;t mind being without cellular service. Check out the links above for more options.

Nearby Attractions: The water is the attraction!!

A final tip: When you climb out of the gorge heading towards Vernal, Utah (Dinosaur county) you drive up so high that you will find yourself in forests thick with pine and aspen. Along the roadside you will spot scatterings of boondockers tucked into the tree line, Hunters, backcountry base camps, weekend warriors… any nature lover with a pulse will want to stop. Just assume you will to and start your research now.

Great spot, lots of turnoffs down this road, about 15 minutes from main road, no 4x4 necessary but expect washboards. I camped towards the end of the road on a bluff overlooking the water, epic!

We liked this spot so much we stayed a week. Left on Friday when the RVs started rolling in. Great access to water. Make sure to stop at visitors center and pay to keep this place as nice as it is: $5/day or $15/wk

Awesome spot! Lots of other RVs but if you have 4WD you can get down to the areas they can’t and it can be nice and secluded. Spent a couple days here.
