The other reviewers were not exaggerating. This place is UNBEARABLE!!! Tons of Mosquitoes! Only during the middle of the day (with lots of repellent) can you do anything. Plan on staying indoors most of the time. We left after only one night!

Report Check-In

Très sympathique comme endroit mais beaucoup beaucoup de moustiques ces temps-ci.

Report Check-In

Mosquito nightmare! They were somehow finding their way into our van with the doors and windows closed, though we were camped on the beach. We bailed at 7:30am because the outside of the van was COVERED in tenacious blood suckers.

The road in and out is also a traffic jam nightmare with all of the busses taking workers in/out of the refineries.

Report Check-In

This place was perfect for me as I am not a big people person. I would imagine at different times of the year it would be much more crowded, but when I checked in at the ranger station, the park rangers were extremely helpful and suggested camping on the beach. I was concerned about my 2wd minivan having problems, but they assured me it would be no issue. so a night was spent alone on the beach in my van for only $13. No hookups there obviously, and the only thing provided was garbage cans on the beach, but I didn't need anything else. This place is very remote. No beach houses or development within view, just the Gulf of Mexico and a few oil platforms in the distance. Mosquitos were pretty thick in sheltered parts of the park, but the wind kept them away from the beach. Camping on the beach is restricted if tides are high, but that wasn't an issue the day I was there, but as this is a pretty long drive to get there, might best to call ahead to see if it is available if that is a concern. Actual campsites with hookups are pretty limited and as fas as I know you can't reserve online ahead of time, I believe it is first come first served basis. If you enjoy bird watching, there are lots of opportunities to check off some species from your life list.

Fair because of Mosquitos!!! I thought at 57F it would be too cold for mosquitos and they would be lethargic. Not so, even on Nov 27. I know why nobody was out walking or outside. Note: found fewer bugs on the beach. Water fairly calm, so beach camping permitted

Report Check-In

Arrived pretty late and did an easy self check-in/pay. There were plenty of level spots to park in — no beach camping at the time. Apparently it is tide related. Very windy and TONS of mosquitoes. Be aware of them. >.<

It was very quiet though!

I wouldn’t go out of the way to stay here, especially if beach camping is closed or if the weather isn’t ideal.

Report Check-In

Lots of mosquitoes!!! FYI. road is out to Galveston

updated review after staying 3 days. the price paid ( 20.00 per night ) was worth it for the peace of mind I had during the tornados and gales that hit the area during my stay here. Rangers kept me updated on weather conditions .. i found myself once again hunkered down in concrete block bathrooms and felt much safer there than in my motorhome which was rocking like crazy. paved parking areas rather than the free beach parking which was evacuated and would have been under water. by the end of the 2nd day electricity and water was on and no more issues. the storm brought in tons of cool shells. yes there are many mosquitoes, no I didn't catch any blue crabs, yes it is 30 minutes out of the way on a dead end road, no the gulf waters were not pretty here .. almost no cell signal with at&t . trails still closed due to the last storms and east Beach closed 2 days for an organized boar hunt ( I guess they have a problem with wild pigs here ) .. many negatives about the place .. but the positives outweighed them. very friendly knowledgeable staff .. phone number to call if you need anything .. short walk to a beach i saw no one else on in 3 days. the beautiful sunsets and peaceful safe atmosphere alone were worth the 20.00 a night.

Stop # 114 .. Just arrived to find no water and no electric ... the people working were very nice but.. despite the issues no discount on the price. 7:00 pm i have electric and water.. glad it is fixed.. 5 stars to the men who worked until way after dark to fix the issues. Beach is a short walk so that is nice. Repairs still being made from storms. Mosquitoes were to be expected and can't complain about that. Beach has shells and lots of little pieces of wood. The pros are that the beach is pretty empty. No traffic to get here.. not hard to find.. Paid 20 per night plus entry fee 72.00 for 3 nights .. with water and now electricity.. beach camping available for 13.00 a night I believe. Beautiful sun sets.. no motels or hotels or houses along the beach.. has bathrooms picnic tables and grill. Camped one night on the beach. Got kinda lucky that beach camping was available since they don't allow it during particularly high tides. Recommend you call ahead and confirm before driving all the way out here!

As others have mentioned expect mosquitoes. We encountered quite a few even in late December.

Beach is very hard packed. We were good in our Ford Transit van. Saw a handful of others during the day on the beach but it was all ours by sunset.

A bit of a walk to the pit toilet from the beach. Couldn't find any real bath house, just some outdoor rinse showers.

The night we stayed there was a lot of wind and sea mist coming off the ocean. Don't expect to stay dry just because it isn't actually raining!

Report Check-In

Stayed 2 nights on the beach in a tent ($10 + 3). With ocean breeze (and repellent), the mosquitoes and biting flies weren't bad. Kayaked ($24 for 2 hours) in the sea marsh canals - self-serve by swiping your card or tap touch pay with your phone, provided kayak (single or double), lifejacket, and paddle. Showers are snail style, open air, cold water which worked well in the heat. Pit toilets were clean. Friendly, helpful staff/rangers.

Staying here for 4 nights. Beautiful place, great asfalt spots. A lot of space between spots. Great walking along the beach. Can get sunrise and sunset from same spot
But only one issue. Mosquitoes!

Report Check-In

Camped on beach for one week. Mosquitos are a problem. Otherwise, glorious.

Report Check-In

They are rebuilding after the storms but still open. $23 for water and electric. You can camp and drive on the beach. mosquitoes even in December was a huge problem. Within five minutes of parking the vehicle I was already being swarmed. Good place no showers decent for a night

Report Check-In

Nice small state park on the ocean. We showed up without reservations hoping to camp on the beach but it was high tide. Luckily there was one spot left for two nights in the campground. Only 15 spots. Picnic tables, fire pits, lantern stand, electric and water. Dump station close by. Miles of beautiful beach!

Report Check-In

Stayed on beach for $10 but never seen so many mosquitoes. Left 1st thing in morning. 13 hook up sites available at $20 a night. Bought Texas State Pass ($70) & immediately saved the $3 each entrance fee (u pay this every day per person) & would have received 50% off campsite for 2nd night only had we stayed. No hot showers on this site either although they have some outside rinse showers.

Report Check-In

abnormal tide, so could not camp on beach, took an rv spot instead for $20. quiet. one to no bars of TMobile E. beach is hard pack and passable with a minivan

Report Check-In

Nice quiet park. No beach due to high winds and abnormal high tide.

Report Check-In

Popular, sites with electric & water $20 plus $3 per person. Primitive beach sites $10 plus $3 per person, pit toilets, cold outdoor rinse off shower. Walking trails, kayaking is popular. No trees

Report Check-In

Nice place to camp on the beach. Loved the sunset and watching the shrimp boats. They also have developed campsites with full hookups.

Report Check-In

Costs $10 to stay on the beach plus $3 each person. But not much between the water and the shore. Beach is hard pack. Lots of mosquitoes. And alligators too apparently. But nice hiking trails thru the marsh. All in all a lovely spot. We used the RV dump and took on water.

Report Check-In

15 sites available off the beach. $20/night plus $3/person state park fee. Great place to visit, quiet, clean and hook ups available.
