Latest Check-Ins

A follow-up to my last posting. If you are heading east after staying here, you will most likely have to return back to Ludlow to access the I-40. Route 66 is temporarily closed until repairs are completed to a bridge. It was reported that you could you could bypass the closure by driving off road at 3 bridge crossings but I wasn't prepared to take the chance. You could also head south to 29 Palms.

Report Check-In

Parked in the main parking lot with our camper. 2 other vehicles arrived after dark. Other than high winds no issues to report. Site has vault toilets and picnic tables covered by canopies. Good cell reception (ATT) for my phone, but my partner's phone couldn't pick up anything except when they climbed the crater.

Report Check-In

Stopped here for 3 nights. Trains can be heard but not that loud. The hike to the crater is well worth it

Report Check-In

Big rig friendly: 5 (of 5). Stayed in the lower parking lot (no facilities).
Noise: 3. Quiet - when there weren’t trains (there were several throughout the night).
Cell reception: 5.
View / aesthetics: 5. Beautiful location, nice hike to/around crater (do it in the morning before it warms up).

Things to think about: we had been hoping to buy beer to have at our site, but there are VERY limited options available at Roy’s drive up (closest town). We were able to get ice and jugs of water. They have soda/drinks. (No beer or alcohol.)

Report Check-In

Three hours is enough time to hike to the crater, up to the rim, down in the caldera and back to parking lot.

Report Check-In

Arrived this evening after dark. Both lots empty. I would suggest the lower lot is mean for overnighting.
Some excitement at my rig was at the maximum of the two bridges I had to cross between Amboy and here. Apparently this part of the old Rte 66 is not being maintained.

Report Check-In

Paved and pretty leveled parking lot. Very quiet at night. Lot of trains during the night but not so bad. Very good signal for AT&T.

Report Check-In

Nice place to stop for the night after hiking the crater. Joined by one other camper for the night. Some train noise but accepted. 5 bars ATT. We camped in the overflow parking.

Report Check-In

Nice spot for a night. I stayed in the first paved area driving in and had it to myself for the night. In the middle of nowhere, but the hike to the crater & around the rim is worth the stop. Very quiet except for the trains, but none of them blew their whistle while I was there. No service with TMobile.

Report Check-In

Paved road. Outhouses. Nice lookout spot. 2-3 bars AT&T; 4 bars and roaming on T-Mobile (my hotspot didn’t work)

Report Check-In

Great hiking and views. Weather was great.

Report Check-In

Not a bad place to camp granted the area. Hot as hell and lots of weird bugs. Don’t leave your doors open with any lights on.

I would say I’d stay again in a pinch, but I’d rather not come back here when it’s this hot.

Report Check-In

Free camping along Route 66. Pit toilets, picnic tables hiking trails.

Report Check-In

Nice paved parking lot with a pit toilet. Great views and a cool hike to the crater

Report Check-In

A good spot for the night. Pit toilets were well kept, and the hike to the crater is well worth it. We found the trains quite loud at night. Met the BLM guy in the morning who came to maintain the area, wasn’t bothered at all that we had stayed. Asked if we wanted to stay longer! Sign says no campfires.

Report Check-In

Stayed here with 2 others in the first area with the picknick tafels. No problem at all. Carbage cans where more then full and restrooms without paper so to less cleaning

Report Check-In

Beautiful area with 3 mile round trip hike to crater. Clean pit toilets and shaded tables

Stayed one night in first parking lot. No signs of any kind and there was a crude fire ring.

A “No campfire” sign was in lower parking lot. However, log book lists reasons for visiting and gives camping as an option, so I am inclined to believe staying overnight is legit.

Report Check-In

just down the road from the trail head.... large paved pull out. Train does pass often but slept with ear plugs and didn't bother much.

Report Check-In

Good place to stop for the night. There were several other vans, all parked in the first lot on the right, not the lot with the pit toilets. No signs. Crater is worth the short hike in the morning. Route 66 sign just up the highway

Report Check-In

Endroit bitumé où se garer pour la nuit. Un parking est plus loin au depart de la randonnée vers le cratère. Près de la voie ferrée où des trains passent constamment. Un peu bruyant et peut être venteux.
