Something not right?

Description

There are a few campsites around the lake which are pretty much bare bones. Fire pits, BBQ and tables at some. Free. Better for car campers but tent campers could make do in a pinch. Near highway 10 so good if you want a free place to stop crossing Texas.

This GPS coordinates route leads to private property in Apple maps. DO NOT USE.
This place is a local money grab $35/night for nothing. Continue to I10 rest stop.

We where charged 10USD per person for camping plus 18USD entrance fee. For this you get no showers but a dirt littered place at the lake. Bored locals are cruising around the lake creating a traffic that rivals the I10. You are covered in dust from all the vehicles.

place is open and only $10/person and $7 permit right on the water. Great spot to crash for the night and drop a line in the water. Super cool rustic bar up the road as well called Jo's Bar & Grill.

The campground and motel are currently closed for renovations but the pool is open and has hot showers, included in the $7.00 entry fee. We swam and had a great time!

We didn’t stay …

$10 for dry camp, $25 for hookups. Nicer spots on the far side, across the dam. Secluded and quiet.

Positives: 1. it’s a long way from the freeway. 2.It’s a long way from the freeway 3. It’s a long way from the freeway. Seriously, you can see the freeway several miles away from the campsites but you can’t hear it and it’s very quiet, at least this time of year. Great view of the mountains and the lake. The sites, as disclosed previously, are a little archaic and scattered and the after hours check in process leaves a lot to assume, but it’s not beyond the comprehension of an overlander to figure it out. There are a lot of nearby RV parks that are dust bowls where you’re lined up like sardines either next to the freeway or in town. The nearby state park was closed so we selected this dust bowl campground. We were able to back our truck to a concrete slab and luxuriate like road royalty. Fine choice. Pick your dust bowl in this part of the state. $25/rv and 2 people. Good AT&T 4g WiFi

Checked in at the office/grocery store. $10/night gives you tent camping anywhere within a few hundred feet of lake. I parked on the southwest side, approximately. Lovely view of the water. Bring your own everything, coz it's primitive.
Weak T-Mobile coverage on this side of the lake, but it was strong by the grocery store where I checked in. my SkyRoam worked great, tho, so obviously it was able to pick up a carrier. Fish jumping up and splashing. Songbirds. Seems like a lot of honeybees around but did not bother us. Easy access to the tent camping area with my 2wd minivan. Dead quiet with no other campers in sight. Nice and lonely way to spend Valentine's Day all alone. I didn't tell my dog it was Valentine's Day, so I saved a bit of cash there.
Great spot to kick back if you're doing a long trip east or west along the i-10.
It's dried grass, smooth and nice to walk on barefoot.

There is multiple spots around the lake. Paid $10. per person at the small general store.

Crude spots no water, no bathrooms or any services bring your own everything. There is a water purifying machine in Balmorhea next to the gas station $1.50 for 5 gallons. We camped at the south west side at a picnic pavilion it was clean of trash but could use some maintenance, lots of rocks to trip over, sticker bushes, tables were run down and broken. I would not mention it for free but it was $20 for two people. We got decent ATT and T-moble reception.

It was quiet we were the only ones there this time of year. Nice view of the night sky and lake. Go location close to I-10 and nice spot to get some sleep on a long drive.

Slept there for a night. Quiet place. Didn’t pay anything and didn’t see any signs

Report Check-In

Pitched a tent here, very nice place. some houses around, nobody seems to care. Lots of wildlife noises all night long (birds, crickets and whatever)

Report Check-In

Not a weekend destination but fine for the night. Woke up to heavy fog in the morning.

Report Check-In

Lake isn’t the best, looks to gross to jump in. No bathrooms but houses nearby so you can’t just dig a hole. Some kind of animal was running into my van most of the night.

Report Check-In

Great spot next to the beach . No one here on a Sunday night . Nice bbq

Report Check-In

there's no clear place to pay. the store is closed and no envelopes. assuming we would pay in the morning. but we won't be here in the morning. the road is muddy and water is coming across a low area at the dike. so afraid if we spent the night we could be stranded here.we rode across the Dyke all the way to the other side of the lake so glad there was a turnaround spot.

Report Check-In

Cheap camping along Balmorhea Lake. It is a fairly quick jaunt off I-10. Stop at store to buy $10 permit. If closed, pay at slot or return the next morning to pay by card. Cell service. Saw bathrooms in the morning but didn’t check them out. Facilities are worn down and old. If you kayak or SUP, could be a nice place to stop. Good place for quick stop while traveling through Texas.

Report Check-In

Very nice place, not far off the 10, perfect for a short stay over for the night as we are returning home from Baja, Mexico.

Report Check-In

it is $20 for 2 people in a van to stay. not worth it, no infrastructure.

Report Check-In

Very calm and nice this morning.

The check in place is weird with no directions on where to go.

I paid $5 in an envelope not sure if that was correct said $20 but I’m just in a van.
Parked on north side of the lake and a bbq Picnic covered area 20 feet from the water quite a few cars driving by in the middle of the night other than that pretty nice place to stop in the middle of Texas

Report Check-In

Minimal facilities. A few secluded campsites around the lake. Make sure and pay your fee at the general store, it's not free. Not a bad spot for an overnight stay.

Report Check-In

Not free anymore, I paid $5 to stay overnight in my van

Report Check-In

They said it has never been free. For us two and the van would be 20$. For us was to expensive for not much infrastructure.
Shouldn't be private property!
