Description

Paid BLM campground. Has vault toilets and dumpsters. No water, no electricity. 59 desert sites with no shade. Each site has picnic table and fire ring. Roomy and flat sites, plenty of room for any kind of rig. Have to sign up via recreation.gov now but can sign up same day. Great cell coverage, I have 3 bars of 5G on Visible. Since there’s coverage here you can just signup when you get here if it looks like there’s plenty of sites available. There were only 10 other campers here when I stayed. Generator hours are 8am-10pm, but everyone actually shut down around 7, just past sunset. No camp host onsite, but there is a spot for one, so maybe just between hosts right now. Toilets are clean and well stocked with toilet paper.

This is a very nice campground with historical significance and petroglyphs. It’s easy to get to and has nicely spaced, large campsites with picnic tables and fire rings. At $8/night ($4 for Sr Pass holders), it’s a good deal, but the $8 reservation fee from recreation.gov is a ripoff, and you can’t pay with cash on site. Very peaceful and quiet.

Report Check-In

$8/night and must be paid thru their website +8 reservation fee (even if you pay once you arrive, it's automatically charged).

Report Check-In

Petroglyphs area. If you are into petroglyph, it’s a hump of a mountain with rocks with a lot of petroglyphs. You have to reserve online it’s eight dollars for the night and an additional eight dollar fee to make the reservation a little stiff. There is nothing to do here except the petroglyphs if you’re into that. To do it over again I would not come here.
The positives, there are pit toilets there are garbage it’s very quiet a good place to read a book and it’s close to the highway very easy to get here all paved roads

My comment (from drpochoa) of 1/30/2024 needs an edit. Reservations or payment not available ON SITE, not “online”….

Report Check-In

Large and flat sites. No noise at all. As others said: the petroglyphs will not be the reason to come back again.,

Report Check-In

As others have described, great place to visit. Campsites well spaced, lots of room. No water. No electricity. Good AT&T cell coverage. Garbage and pit toilets. Some day use tables under shelter.
Reservation online only. You cannot pay for or book a site online. Recreation.gov. Sites are $8 ($4 with federal pass) per night. and “reservation fee is another $8.
Dark sky site if nearby campers allow. Generator hours are 8am to 10pm :(.

This has got to be the most extensive display of Petroglyphs I’ve seen to date. $2 per car to come or you can also use your America the Beautiful pass. It’s 11 miles down from the freeway but road is paved until the last .02 miles or so. There’s also covered picnic area and clean pit toilets. Several camp spots that can be reserved online through .gov site as per usual. I’d say this would be a good place when it’s not as hot like spring or winter. I can imagine summer can be brutal but I’d say the Painted Rocks /Petroglyphs is a site to see. There’s also plaques around the area that goes with the walking tour.

RESERVATIONS ONLY
I turned up late, new signs up by front of campground but not on the 11 miles from the highway to get here. I’m staying anyway…wish me luck!

Report Check-In

flat, dusty and no shade. one RV besides myself. okay overnight stop, but not really worth going out of one's way for.

Report Check-In

Great clean quiet spot. pulled in late Sunday night. about 25% full. mostly rvs and trailers. spots are big and great for big rigs to maneuver.
each space has fire ring and table. clean vault toilets.
$8
incredible petroglyphs!!

Report Check-In

Signage can be a bit confusing here, so I have included a picture confirming $6 for camping and petroglyphs with the "America the Beautiful" pass. That is the normal pass people under 62 have.
There is no signage about this discount at the campground, only at the day use area. I only looked around for it because other overlanders indicated this discount.

Wide open desert campground, but well spaced and not very busy on a Friday.
Looks like there is some BLM free camping across the main road, although with 4x4 entrances.

Report Check-In

Quick and pleasant little detour for spending the night when traveling I-8. The campground is large, quiet and dark. Big enough for any size rig and has ADA sites as well. There is a bathroom, dumpsters and each site has a picnic table and fire ring. AT&T signal was strong. . Petroglyphs site is right beside the camping area. We have a National Park Pass so the camping was $6.00 and Petroglyphs were free. Otherwise, it would be $8.00 and $2.00. We arrived at dusk and there were maybe 10 other campers

Great CG but super hot tonight (100F). Petroglyphs are interesting and have an informative walk with placards around the site. Put toilets are super clean (TY). Each site has a fire ring and picnic table.

Report Check-In

Lots of campsites which are FF now or reservable in season on recreation.gov. We are the only campers (it’s 100F). The pit toilets are super clean. There is a walk amongst the petroglyphs (and there are a lot of glyphs to view). Each site has a fire ring and picnic table.

Report Check-In

Just what i needed after being in too many campgrounds that were more like rv parking lots. This place is huge, open, expansive . Each spot has table and firepit, lots of room between us. Very few here. Quiet. Cheap. Relaxing. Little to no shade.

UPDATE: crazy camphosts. I made an honest mistake, camped where a sign it was reserved for 3/17 (in a few days). A couple came that evening, said they'd just reserved it online, after I'd been set up for 6 hours. We talked, I offered to move, thay said no problem and camped elsewhere. Tons of empty sites. The next morning the 2 hosts drive up fast, start giving me shit, you should, you took someone place, you you should should etc, loud, snapping, aggressive even. I apologize and explain how it wasn't a problem but no. I even suggest we start again with a hello, how are you rather than attacking me. Then the woman jumps out and goes off.
Crazy energy. Time to leave...

We came here after exploring Sears Point and expected the petroglyphs to be less than we found. However, though the area of petroglyphs is small, the concentration is very high. Most of the boulders here are completely covered with petroglyphs. The down side is there is a fence around the area so you can't get close. Remember to bring binoculars to see the ones further away. Very good for an hour or so. We spent the night as the price is $8 or $4 with a pass.

Came on a Monday night in Jan. Place was about 1/2 full. Spots are spread out. This year they don’t take reservations till Feb 1st. Do it was first come, first serve. Hosts are a really sweet couple. 8 dollar fee at the entrance. Each spot has a fire pit but wood is scarce and the host isn’t allowed to sell it. No generator after 8pm so it’s peaceful. Great stars. Watch to the South for a light show if the air base is doing maneuvers. We thought we saw some UFOs for sure. Clean toilets. No showers.

Great campground. Very clean!!! Lots of sites to choose from. Camp hosts are wonderful. Petroglyphs and the history of the area are interesting. About 3/4 of a mile further down the road is an old adobe building. I understand it was a Butterfield stagecoach stop. Spent 5 nights and had friends arrive who are spending at least 10. Will definitely come back.

Report Check-In

Gorgeous campground with nice hosts. Spaces are very large and the petroglyphs are abundant

Report Check-In

Plenty of availability when we visited, huge sites. Picnic tables, fire pits, garbage. $8.

Report Check-In

Beautiful BLM campground with tons of spaces $8 a night and lots of room to spread out. Paved all the way to the campground.

Report Check-In

I really enjoyed this place. The pit toilets are exceptionally clean and worth paying the $8 for. The sunsets and sunrises are beautiful and I was visited by a ruby-throated hummingbird each day. Very nice hosts give you privacy.

Report Check-In

This is hands down one of the nicest campgrounds I've ever stayed in! There were only a handful of other people here on a Monday night in late October, but the only ones we heard was staff/hosts making rounds in the morning. Fire rings, picnic tables and sites of all sizes (RVs, trailers, vans, cars, etc) and sites are spread out. Beautiful sunset and sunrise and the night sky is breathtaking! $8/night, no hookups, water or other facilities. CLEANEST vault toilet I've ever seen. Be sure to check out the interpretive trail with petroglyphs. I've been wanting to check this place out for awhile as I've passed it multiple times on I-8; my only regret is not visiting sooner!

Report Check-In

Huge area, lots of sites, any size rig. No shade, little vegetation. 2 bars Verizon. Pay the fee, my gosh people

Report Check-In

This place is incredible!! Level campsites RIGHT NEXT to the petroglyph art rock mound! Cell service comes & goes but who needs that when you're here? 😉

Report Check-In

Unbelievable spot to camp & enjoy the petroglyph art!! We had a beautiful sunset with big, poof clouds! Level campsites right next to the mound of petroglyphs. Cell service comes & goes but who needs that when you're here?

Report Check-In

This place is beautiful! Very spacious, clean, level spots with a gorgeous view of the mts. & petroglyph rocks SO close to the campsites! $4 a night with Access Pass. Not very strong cell service, but worth staying offline!

Report Check-In

BLM Campground with dozens of well spaced sites. There are hosts. Sunny and windy March 10th, in the middle 60's. Easy access for big rigs. No fee envelopes so we will pay on request, $8 or 1/2 with the pass. 4-5 Verizon bars.

Report Check-In

Only a few other RVs here. Huge spaces so not over crowded in the least. Very nice place to overnight camp. No water!

Report Check-In

Besides waking up at 8am and it being 100 degrees, we LOVED this spot. We had the entire campground to ourselves, the entire time we were here.

Nobody else here at all. The stars are mind blowing!! Total silence and such a beautiful place to explore. We camped here so that we could see the petroglyphs tomorrow. Happy to pay the $8 to support the BLM.

Wide open spaces. Lots of sites. No amenities exept pit toilets. Nice, quiet place. $8 per night is the regular fee.

Report Check-In

Spacious campsites with clean tables and fire grills. Confusing turn onto Rocky Point traveling N, Google’s second choice was a narrow dirt road with a 4’ fall off to Rocky Point! Arrived at 4, plenty of room.

Report Check-In

Luckily when we arrived, our fav spot (#37) was available. Large site. Approx. 20 campers per day, we stayed 5 nights. There is a small library if you’re into that and a dumpster on the way out. Quiet, desert camping. Nice to see the desert so green this visit.

Report Check-In

Quiet, nice big spots. $8. 50F low, 68F high in December. Nice petroglyphs.

Report Check-In

Nice. Quiet. I think 3 other campers, and as others have said, the sites are big and spread out. A little shade along the gully but other than that, bring your own. Maybe the cleanest pit toilet ever - even smells clean.

Another visitor was underwhelmed by the petroglyphs. I think they are fantastic. The eye of the beholder.......

Report Check-In

Really nice place and very Quiet. Windy when we where here. 6$ witch America is Beautiful Pass.

Report Check-In

Nice place to camp, big spots and quite at day and night. 10 campers and tents more

Report Check-In

A nice and quiet place overnight, still the same price

Report Check-In

So the pros: only 10 miles off freeway on our way home to CA. We had the place to ourselves. Cons: hot as hell. No seriously, June 1 it was 104 after dark. Pit toilet, picnic tables, trash cans and fire pits are amenities. No water! Official price is $8 to camp and $4 with a Annual Parks Pass. Petroglyphs are not worth the visit unless you need to camp here.
