Something not right?

Description

Beautiful Forest Service maintained campground. Vault toilets, trash bins, level sites, fire pits, and picnic tables. 5 sites, all empty when I was here in February. Right on a river and relatively easy access via a dirt road. One of the best free campgrounds I've seen. No Verizon cell signal.

All the sites were taken when we arrived at 5:30 pm. One of the campers told us about another spot up the road, first right down a slope. 2 sites there. We got our camper van down to the site on the left with a stone firepit. Other camper came along a little later on dirtbike and had tea with us. It was an awesome experience.

Absolutely fantastic spot. At first we missed it and ended up at a large clearing to a very steep gravel road. Turned around and ended up finding hickey gap.

all except for one spot was full at 7 PM on a Thursday in October

Awesome little campground. Not going to be free much longer, but the fee that has been proposed is only $10.00 well worth that.

this is a nicer free camping area tgey are trying to make it a pay spot. all of our free camping areas are getting taken away. everyone please look at the pappers posted and put your input in. there soon will not be anymore free camping if they keep taking them away from us. most of us can't book months in advance on the website and even if we do there could be rain, medical, work or any other problems arise. then not only are you not going to be able to go but it knocks another family out as well.

Only two sites were taken when I arrived. But, it was a wet, windy and somewhat cold Thursday. All you can hear is the rushing water. Beautiful surroundings and mostly clean campground. The bear-proof trash cans were all full and someone left several Coke cans in the site’s fire ring. Pit toilet was in some nasty shape. No Verizon cell signal. The little downhill road in has a rather nasty rut at the moment.

Very nice campsites. They are well spaced so that nobody is right next to each other. On a weeknight in the summer there was only one other van out here. It is lovely listening to the babbling creek that runs right by the campsites!

Worth the drive. will be back. only 5 spot. first come first serve.

Great spot. As everyone describes. Here in October and rolled in around 9:30pm. One spot open! Picnic table and fire ring, bathrooms. Near a crystal clear creek. It was a long rattling drive up the road, wouldn’t want to do it in any big rig. I’m in a full size truck with truck camper.

windy bumpy road up to the campsite but traversed in prius just fine. only 5 sites available so make sure to get there earlier. each site has a fire ring, tent platform, and picnic table. stream runs right next to it so filterable water available. nice to hear the stream at night too. a pretty calm place to camp. trash cans and toilets available as well. seemed to be nice trails nearby.

30ish minute drive down a dirt mountain road, 4 really good campsites and one that is pretty good. Big waterfall about half a mile or so down the creek, moderate trail leading to it. So very worth it!

Report Check-In

Lovely spot, a short walk down stream to some small waterfalls. Only one issue with this site, rubbish, around the site and in the stream.

This place is easily the best free camping you’ll ever stay at. Only 5 sites but the place is awesome. Plenty of trails to hike, bike, and explore especially if you can stay for a few days. I only stayed one night and did some mountain biking. . It was epic. Will definitely be back to this one!

Very nice Place! It was raining and high Winds but no Problems!

The description of this is spot on. We came and took a campsite number five, right along the stream. Loved it so much that we stay for four days. I completely agree this is the best free campsite I have ever found. It is a decent drive down the gravel road in a camper van, however if the road is in good condition and the campsite is well worth it!

Report Check-In

Great place. Nothing has changed from other reviews. Cell coverage is good at top of drive. Also once you see the sign for Hickey Gap turn right then left down the drive.

Report Check-In

Beautiful free campground, only one other camper was there. We did have a slight bug problem but that’s most likely due to the nearby creek. To get here you have to drive down a narrow gravel road for about 30 minutes (5-7 miles). If we had not properly secured our gear it would’ve fallen out. Perfect place for dogs.

Report Check-In

Exactly as described, but farther down the road as located by Google Maps. Unfortunately even on a Sunday evening just before sundown all 5 spots were occupied. The gravel road to the camp was very well maintained, but in a camper-van everything rattles and made the road quite tedious. I didn't feel like making the 45 minute drive back out in the dark. So I just found a level spot off the main road to park up for the night. In the morning only 2 spots were still occupied.

Seemed nice but all spots where taken when we arrived.
