Gorgeous free campsites! Fire rings, BBQ, and covered picnic tables. Constant breeze helps keep you cool without the need for electric/ac. Would definitely come back again! Free hot showers and bathrooms. Not all sites will accommodate larger rigs, but there is some room.. We're in a 32ft trailer towed with a Tahoe. Found spot FF8 accommodated us just fine without needing to unhitch to fit.

This is the Fritch Fortress Campground.

The bathrooms were closed due to winter and I guess because there are no paid electric sites (unlike Sanford Yolk)

Still it was nice to have a free place to sleep in my van without bother. Very pretty.

The sites seemed to be too small to be big rig friendly.

Beautiful spot. Stay up to 14 days. Picnic tables, pit toilets, fire rings, dumpsters. Little to no cell service. ATT

so I seem to be in the minority here, but I wasn't a fan of this spot at all. there's a nice view of the lake, but that's about it. there's a traffic loop with several pull offs where you park your campers. the pull offs each accommodate several camp sites, so you're literally parallel parking along the road with other campers right in front and behind you. after I parked, 2 vans parked right in front of me, and a pull behind camper wedged in right behind me. you're only a foot off the road, so all vehicles coming through pass right beside your camper. on top of that, all the sites are HORRIBLY off level. the first spot I tried, I was literally a whole foot 12" off level! the spot I ended up in was a little better, but I was still well off level even using all of my leveling blocks. the view was ok, if you've never seen a lake before, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come back here again. the main thing going for it is that it was free to see the national monument, and there was free water and dump station too.
strong Verizon service, slow att service. the sites were way much better in the harbor bay area. but there's no view there, and limited cell service.

Free campground looking over the water.
I was the only one camping there and it was extremely quiet with a few cars driving through. The bathrooms were closed but it looks like it is a nice bathhouse from the outside.

Absolutely stop here! It’s incredible that this place is free. It has great views, bathrooms & showers (I actually didn’t use them since I have a toilet in my rig & just had to go #1 the whole time I was here), some (short) trails for walking/running, water & a dump station. It also felt safe and had great Verizon cell reception. It definitely got cold at night (I was here in late Feb) but if you have some sort of heating system or just really warm sleeping bags, it should be ok. Wish I could’ve stayed longer!

nice free spot that I can only wish that we had back in Québec. sunset are amazing
careful for rattle snakes I stepped on one in the middle of the road I wasn't paying attention and walked backwards talking to my friend. I got so lucky.

FREE. Plenty of availability even at dusk. Quiet. Hot Showers. Private.

Like everyone else has said, WOW! Absolutely gorgeous view of the lake. Clean bathrooms with FREE SHOWERS! Potable water. Several campsites with picnic tables and charcoal grills. Good Verizon LTE service. Stunning free campsite!!

Spot on cliff over lake. Handful of spots. Most parking is slanted, tents have better chance of being level. Wasn’t bad though in a van. Sheriff made a few rounds at night. Easy to find. Lots of wind, no bugs. Nicer bathrooms with running water. Very quiet. Gorgeous sunrise, sunset, and star views

Wonderful and peaceful right on the lake!

Rolled in after a long driving day and woke up to a fantastic view! BIG covered picnic area + grills + fire rings for each site. Bathrooms with electricity AND free showers. ✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️

A wonderful campsite on the lake. Nice bathroom with shower - FREE!
Very windy!!!!!!!

Report Check-In

Almost too good to be true, but it's true! Can't believe this place is free! Great campsites with covered picnic tables and trash cans. Most spots are on the cliff with breathtaking views of the lake. Epic sunsets!! Pristine, well stocked bathrooms. Hot showers with good pressure. Spotty cell sign but full LTE service when it works. To go for a swim, go down the road at the North end of the campground and there is a little beach to the right of the boat ramp. So perfect on a hot August day. Veryyy windy. Stake your stuff down well!

Report Check-In

Woah!!!!! Talk about epic!!! Free hot showers that will burn your face off. Epic sunsets and cool lighting storms. Beware if you are in a tent it can get windy but this place is epic if you haven’t had a shower or would like a nice clean quiet place for a day or two.

Open at the moment. Yes to all stated above .

Wow. To say that this is an amazing campsite is an understatement.

How it’s free, I don’t understand.

No electric, but that’s the last thing on your mind while you’re here.

Showers were blazing hot, potable water for us to refill, and if it’s cold (20° here today), the bathrooms aren’t frigid so it isn’t terrible when you have to sit down on the toilet!

The views, wow. This is at the top of a cliff, so it’s windy, but the sunset is unreal. The lake is a beautiful blue with some spots of interesting teal green.

Definitely go over to Alibates National Monument while you’re here. The red soil is absolutely unbelievable.

I use Visible for my cell phone provider (prepaid Verizon) and I’ve had 3-4 bars the entire time up here. Speeds varied but assume network management and I don’t have high priority being a prepaid customer. I averaged around 30 mbps but checked last night and had 50mbps.

First picture is of the view from the campsite and the rest are from Alibates.

What a wonderful free campground! Perched up high for panoramic views of Lake Meredith. Only 2 of the 4 toilet/shower cubicles are open at the moment but really hot water and high pressure. Picnic tables, bins and potable water as everyone has mentioned. Dump station is on the left before you come into the loop road. They’re not exactly private spots, more like pullouts on the side of the road with some spots more level than others. Still a fantastic place to spend a few days. Very peaceful and can get windy. Cracking sunsets. Just can’t believe it’s free! You can stay for 14 days. We get T-Mobile service but it is patchy. Thanks NPS!

Fantastic! Free hot showers! Potable water! Metal shade structures with picnic tables! Beautiful scenic overlook! Lots of interesting stick insects and grasshoppers! Honestly this is a fantastic spot, if windy and chilly end of October.

Clean and mowed. Lots of dogs off leash. Free camp spots with most overlooking lake. Stay up high for good internet.

Stayed a couple of nights, beautiful ridge overlooking the reservoir! Very beautiful to see so much water in the midst of a very dry landscape. Public restrooms with showers was definitely a plus! There is also clean water available :) at least six places to pull up a car or van

Report Check-In

Toilet and hot shower in individual stall that was clean, until the busy weekend. Outlet inside the stall and clean water on site. Many other free camping spots around the lake as well, but this one has good cell service. Picnic shelters with grills.

Woooooooooowwwww! This place was spectacular and scary all within the 4 days we were here. We arrived around 9pm at night to the most amazing sunset and lightening show I’ve ever seen (and I’m from Fl). Traveling here, we didn’t have internet and no expectations. The views and sites are beyond amazing! Especially for Free!!! Anyways, the first night we parked at the last spot at the top of the hill. While cooking dinner... man, did the winds pick up! We have a 12’ cargo trailer camper conversion and it was blowing us around. Felt like a Tropical Storm was outside. So we hooked back up and moved down the hill to the spot in front of the bathrooms so the wind could be blocked by the hill some. SOOOOO glad we did.

The sunsets every night have been amazing. Just be cautious to follow the weather. Our 3rd night, just like the first, but worse, another crazy storm came through from the other direction. Every camper in a tent left and some even abandoned theirs. The next morning you could see them all bent up.

Showers are great... nothing is fancy or high tech but hot water is everything ;) There is a water spicket in the front and trash on the parking side of the bathrooms.

Even with the CRAZY wind... we will definitely be back!

This is a really lovely "campground" high on the cliffs of Meredith Lake. Several spots are located on a paved loop road, each with their own fire pit and wood/charcoal grill, two sheltered picnic tables and stunning views. There is a small parking lot by the bathrooms for people in tents and only a few sites that have pulls offs on the side of the road for vans and RVs. There are four private bathrooms each with their own hot showers, and there is a potable water pump located just outside the bathrooms. The bathrooms themselves have plugs for electricity. There is a road that leads down to a boat ramp for water access. We were here on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend and it wasn't that busy. The sites are certainly not private, everything is very wide open, but we had a pleasant stay nonetheless.
CAUTION: This is tornado territory and we were kept awake for many hours with battering winds, lightning and thunder. We got severe tornado warnings on our phone at 1am. We ended up being fine, but you might want to check the weather before you camp (especially in a tent).
