Description

Moderator Note: May 2022. Camping overnight is illegal.
.....
A good sized watering hole apx 1 kn down a narrow, sandy dirt track. This track off the road to the South Gate of the National Park is not marked. It is subtle, just a few tire tracks and mashed grass. "Tons" of elephants throughout the night and. a few in the light of the morning.

Nothing particularly nice about the place except the game. Once you emerge from the trees, there is a lot of wide open space, or you can tuck back into the grass and small trees further from the water if you wish to be more discreet.

Although no cell reception throughout this broad area GTC came in and out during the night.

BTW if you are traveling with a dog, keep him/her out of the water. There is a perimeter of mud and excitement that my dog ignored until she was chest deep. AN AWFUL MESS! Maybe you dog is smarter.

*Update May 2022. Patrolled by community rangers writing tickets and asking ppl not to camp here. Details updated below*

Lovely big waterhole. We had lots of Ellies coming to visit and lots of lion roars close by but didn’t see any. We hid behind a bush and we were undisturbed. Nice spot to even stop for lunch or a drink

Nice spot, HOWEVER... we were awoken at 11:30pm by 2 community patrol men in uniform in an offical truck. Scared the pants off of us. They were very friendly, but explained it is illegal to camp here & they dont want ppl camping here. The said we could move to an actual campsite, but they would be closed or they would write us a ticket. Ticket wAs 300Pula each. After some chat and negotiation we decided on 300Pula for both of us.
They wrote us a ticket with both our and they community info on it and asked us to go back to wherever we read about this spot and tell others not to camp here.
Consider yourself informed:)

What an amazing wildcamp spot! We stayed here with two families. Liked the place in particular because it’s very open so we could have good sightings of the kids.
Built a Boma and felt very safe. Heaps of elephant and during the night hundreds of wildebeast passing. Highly recommended.

We didn’t see any game but enjoyed wildcamping here before entering Moremi South Gate. It’s possible to drive from here to Xakanaxa campsite (in Moremi) in a day.

Really nice place to spend the night, 1000m2 flat sandy ground, wood to make a fire. There is no water at the moment in the waterhole. We hear a roaring in early morning. We saw 4 elephants while having breakfast.

Report Check-In

Large natural waterhole. Lots of evidence of elephants but currently dry (29/5/19). Would be great place to wild camp.
