There are several free campsites in the New River Gorge. We stayed one night at the Stone Cliff campground. Only one site for a small RV, all the other sites are for tents only. There is a toilet, but no potable water, just the river nearby. Very nice spot. Check out this page for more info about all of the campgrounds at the New River Gorge:

Loved this campsite right on the beach! It’s a pretty busy location with people coming and going, but clears out at night.
Report Check-Inthis place is very much open but is walk-in tent camping only. spots located on the beach near the start of the trail.
Report Check-InBeautiful spot! Somewhat easy access in our Transit HR. level parking lot with just one other vehicle. It does sit along a busy train track that runs through the night.
Report Check-InSteep driveway in but was able to get it done with 25ft bus. My maps to this location told me to cross the river to arrive but I just followed the marked signage down into the campground. All the sites were washed out by flooding so I stayed park in the back lot. One other campervan and a small sedan stayed overnight. Asked a ranger who pulled in if it was ok to stay in that spot and they approved it. No issues all night, great, quiet spot.
Report Check-InNice campsite right by the river. One pull in spot for a truck or small RV with fire ring. The rest of the sites are walk in. Seems to be a popular fishing spot for locals, lots of folks coming and going. Loud trains at night, but the kicker was cars doing donuts and playing loud music in the parking lot at 3:30 am. Gotta love it.
Report Check-InNice spot right by the river. Pretty crowded though. We were here on a Sunday afternoon / night and saw upwards of 50 people. Also right near the train tracks and several loud freight trains went by during the night
