Description

Last checkpoint on Nigerian side if you follow the route from Gembu - Dorofi - Ribao - Mayo Darlé. We had our passport and CDP already stamped in Gembu, but it looked like they could do it here as well.
The route suggested by maps.me was accurate but it is challenging and I think it is only doable in the dry season on a motor or in a compact 4wd when you have basic 4x4 driving skills. I did it in a Defender 110 without problems.
On rainy days roads might get to slippery and the river crossing is maybe too deep.
It took five hours from Gembu to Dorofi, this includes the time lost at the many checkpoints along the way. From here to Ribao took less than two hours and one more hour to go to Mayo Darlé. It will be faster on a motor.
Amazing scenery and a lot of fun if you like off-road driving.

Some informations about the road between this two countries. We are on 2 motorcycles, end of dry season.
1- The road we took : From Mayo Darle (Cameroon side) to Dorofi (nigerian border) then to Kabri then to Gembu.
2 - Stamps :
We stamped our CDP in Mayo Darle. First they said they couldnot do it, saying we have to go to Banyo etc. But we said that we have no other choice than crossing in Dorofi. So they did the CDP stamp. No stamp out on the passport for Cameroon. Nigeria side they couldnot did anything at the border. We had to do the CDP in Gembu. But no need to do anything for the visa in your passport.
3 - How is the road ?
Its dry season and there was no rain for months so it was ONLY dust. Not a single drop of water. From Mayo Darle to Dorofi : 1h. The road was very good. All flat, no bumpy at all. Just one big uphill at the end for 800m, but nothing "challenging". But it's very steep so your car or motorbike must be powerful enough to climb or brake.
Then from Dorofi to Gembu the road is not very good. Some parts are ok and you can drive with no issues, some parts there are big big down/uphill and big holes ! Some steep with rocks but nothing too much for my cb500x (not a proper adv bike). We saw 4x4, even trucks, on the road so its duable but you have to go slow. And there are some parts where the road is very damage. So you have to have some offroad skills. But its only on 30km. We did this parts in 3h.
4- Safety : no problem. All the cops were friendly. But there are many locals roadblocks. At least 10. Everytime they asked for money we just told them no and to open the gate and they did. So nothing to worry. And in all the villages the locals were very friendly and welcoming
5- River crossing : there is one with a small pirogues for motorcycle to cross. It was 1000 Naira. And at this time of the year the water level is not too hight so you can cross with a 4x4. We saw some cars crossing it.
So at the end we did Cameroon to Nigeria in 4h. So yep the road is on some parts challenging, but everything is dry so you cant be stuck or slide.

But the road was challenging. I dont think its duable in rainu season.

Very friendly chaps stamped out our carnet first. Then the police stamped us out. All very friendly, but not quick due to chatting and some confusion by the difference in visa and stamp dates.

I took a different way from Nigeria to Cameroon: Gembu - Warwar - Dorofi - Maya Darle. The road is not on maps me or Google maps. I was directed by the locals.
As described, not the easiest way, I did it with a honda transalp and a lot of weight. Was fine so far, only last stretch down to Cameron was really hard, as it started to rain. Landed on the side. But made it finally. Scenery is incredible.

Small immigration office on the way to Cameroon. Very friendly officer. Be aware that this is not a custom office and CDP cannot be stamped there. This has to be done at the custom office in Gembu!
Road is bad and needs off-road scills.River Crossing was exiting. We did this with our Toyota LandCruiser HDJ80 and had no problem. Not sure, whether it is possible during the rainy season. Beautiful landscape!!

Motorbikes only : the road(s) from gembu to dorofi is challenging and narrow. there are 2 options to get to dorofi : the one I took : on the picture and the one on the GPS (that I had started with, and then backtracked coz a guy told me the other way is easier to follow) but I think the one on the GPS is actually better to follow.
2 river crossing on my side. they manage it well. Better not have a big bike though.
From Dorofi, as soon as you enter Cameroon there is a steep descent (if raining, take Valium) of 800m, then it's excellent wide pist to Mayo Darle.
I went with DRZ400 lightly packed, it was good : 4h. Heavier bike may have a hard time depending conditions / driving skills. Locals ride it 2 people with 50kg rice bag on their light bikes...
Landscape and atmosohere are extremely rewarding though. For directions : ask around for Dorofi, people will point you to the right direction.
Enjoy!
