Description

Locals recommended we go up the road from Coroico, so you are on the inside of the road. Wait until after 230pm so the bike riders are done. We did it and loved it.

Comment: took RN25 and RT40 to get to Coroio.By far road of death is the best scenery and IS a thrill and not a Sunday drive. 1530 start time is the key traveling up hill from Coroio as you have more vehicular control... downhill you will be constantly braking. you drive on the opposite side of the road to normal as does everybody else.....one barrier stop asking for toll money but I took 2 locals who were hitching to thier house which seemed to qualify for gratis passage ...The other tolls mentioned are scams. I drove by as the barriers were up.

This is NOT the official entry to the Death Road. 200metres down is a landslide and you have to drive backwards on slippery surface.
The entrance is 500meter up the road.

Report Check-In

ps: we drove in at 15.15h. nobody at the entrance to collect money. not a single biker all the way. just one tourist bus coming our way.

alsof today 6//7 the death road is open again for cars! we were literally the first to pass with a car since January. Expect more roadworks, so perhaps some waiting. The landslide passage is narrow, so I wouldn't do it with a big truck (yet) but vans can pass. no 4*4 needed. Beautiful road but not that challenging.

Report Check-In

Not as spectacular as expected, but still very entertaining. We started at 2pm, nobody crossed us.

Good experience! Road is not to difficult but it’s a pleasant drive. I drove up, started at 13:00 and ended at 15:30 with lots of photo stops. In a Ram Promaster 2500 cargo van.

Amazing drive. We also started from the bottom at around 15:00. Had to stop for several bikers. Drive carefully, because they comw down at full speed and little control over the bike. Paid 5 Bob of toll. First wanted 25, then 50 (for 2 people) in the end gave us recipt and lots of change back. On the recipt it was stated Parricular, 5Bob 😊

Also started from downhill around 14h00, saw only a handful bicycles and that was it.

The guy at the bottom couldn’t give me change back, so he told me to buy a ticket at the top. Arrived at 15h30 at the top, there was no one there anymore. Did the road for free.

Also, only the first 10 km from the top are nice. The rest is just an ordinary dirt track.

I agree with what is said bellow. Nicer views from the “new” F3.

We started uphill at 7:15am and only saw a couple of collectivos. It is better to go uphill since you have to 'keep to your left' so you hug the wall the whole time. No bicyclists. We didn't pay a dime! Total time exactly 2 hours in 17 miles.

Report Check-In

Started around 15:00 and paid 50 Bol total for 2 persons at the end (and got a receipt). Didn't pass any cyclists or locals charging extra on the way. We have for sure driven more scary and beautiful roads, but it was a nice drive anyway!

Nice MTB tour from 4700 into the yungas. Grandios landscape.
You don't need a tour, when you are able to ride a mountain bike.

Report Check-In

I recommend you do it downhill (from La Paz to Coroico) So it is in the same direction as the bikes. I paid 15b at the first checkpoint because I said I was a local, 25b at the 2nd. It was fun on a Moto, maybe not as much in a car. Not dangerous at all.

Report Check-In

We asked for factura after paying the 10bob about half way down. They didnt have one. If we asked before paying we probably wouldnt have paid anything.

Report Check-In

If you are looking for a thrill ots not worth it. But for a relaxing scenic drive, we really enjoyed it. I wouldn't pay 50. But after 5.00 the work day finishes and no one is left to charge. we went at 4.30 and got the tourist tax half way down of 10bob. It was worth it for us for 10.

Report Check-In

Only one nice spot along the road. Not worth the money! If you really want to drive "death road", drive from Coroico to Caranavi just after 5pm (when crazy Bolivian drivers hit the road). Scammers along the road. We paid 25 bol/person at the first gate, then were asked for more and more on other gates!!! We didn't pay of course!

Report Check-In

Sincerely it is not worth the 50 unpaved km for just one interesting spot in the whole route.

We started the road down at 5pm to avoid the bikes traffic and there was not even any tax or people to charge anything.

Probably the adrenaly is lost as all the traffic takes the new route, we just cross a local car near Yolosa.

drove from down to here. we paid only 30 per car. nobody asked us for extra money during all way.we really enjoyed

Report Check-In

Its now 50bob per person to drive the death road, we found the roads around Sorata and the Yungas much prettier with the same steep drop offs and free to drive and no cyclists to dodge. The paved (new) road has also good views also, in our opinion its not worth paying to drive this road

Report Check-In

Really, this is totally not worth it. The Main reason is some sort of scam with tickets going on. They are 25bobs per person and there are 3 checkpoint where they wanted us to buy tickets! Yes on the same "Death road" 3 ticket points. We would not recommend this trip to anyone, do not support scammers. If you feel sorry for people trying to make a living, then go to a Market and buy those herbs to calm your nerves from an old Lady that is sitting there all day.

Downhill direction. Riding through Bolivian Death Road was my dream. Reality? Complete waste of time. As of 2016 this is a serviced road, meaning you will not find here any adventurous parts, there are 2 bends worth stopping to take a picture, you still have to work hard to take picture so it looks "edgy". Most of the road is flat and there is a lot bushes so almost no place to take pictures. The road is now main destination for cyclists, you will be passing groups of 10-15 cyclists every 15 minutes.
Tickets: They charge you 25 Bobs to enter per person, 10km futher there is another gate (!) where there want to charge you another 25 Bobs(even though on your original ticket there is part to rip off and pass it to staff- just to check in) - we drove around barrier without paying. When we finished all boring drive there was 3rd gate lady said that first ticket we purchased is not valid and we have to prese t ticket from 2nd check point (guess to make sure we doubled paid). I kindly asked her to lift barrier, otherwise I am going to throw her off the cliff, we drove through final gate without getting ripped off. We drove from USA to Bolivia on this journey, I experienced rides to local shops more than The Bolivian Death Road

Report Check-In

Started 4:30pm and barely any cars came the other way. There was a landslide they were clearing, chewed coca and hung out with local an hour, good times))
