Something not right?

Description

This is the real position of the "upper" (old) campsite. The point further north is wrong. From the "lower" campsite it is a steep rocky 4x4 road (2,3km). But even for a small truck (7,5 ton) possible.
...and definitely worth to try. From here a (walking) trail leads to the crater.

Great place, loved it! Track is a bit rough on the top part but doable. Very windy in the night!
If you go for the hike, the path is quite overgrown but beautiful!

Beautiful quiet spot, not windy in late May. Spent the night and didn't see anyone. Plenty of flat spots but rocky road to higher sites needs high clearance and 4x4 now. Some intermittent MTN coverage. Lots of hyrax on the crater hike.

Still a great spot! Still windy! Still need 4x4 to do track and high clearance. Totally alone. Lower site had some other people.

We stayed 2 nights alone. Perfect place to be quiet. Free and alone. Amazing view. You need a 4x4 to go here and 30 minutes from the main road because the tracks is totally destroyed. We found some wind protection behind a building.

What a endless view and great star show. Need some good side walls on the tyres and some 4x4 skill but very doable.

Soooo windy at night. Would have camped at the lower site of upper camp but it was taken. Mtc signal comes and goes. Nice hike. 3 hour return if you do the full thing including crest trail

Report Check-In

We stayed at the upper campsite for two nights and it was amazing. The way up is longer than expected and we agree, definitely only for people with 4x4 experience or a sense of adventure.
We were all by ourselves, there were two fellow iOverlanders at the lower camp.

Once you are up there, it’s great. The sites are situated at the “mouth” of the crater. Drop toilets are available and at least one site with an intact roof + wall for wind protection.

We hiked to the rim of the crater. The path is quite overgrown. At one point you can choose between two paths. The left one was in better shape (we did a round trip).

Awesome views both sunset and sunrise. It’s now mid July and the cold winds are Biting!

Little shelter from the wind but the short slow 45 minute walk to the crater along the mountain OTP from here is something to behold.

So glad I spent the eve. Rolling mist
from the crater valley and a view across the plateau for 50kms.

Bring lots of wood as there’s none on the mountain to use

We stayed here for 3 days and loved it. Yes it's still abandoned and there is trash around. We camped at the lowest of the sites. Have a look around and pick one
The wind comes and goes through the day. The road is washed away but doable, we took it slow in low range. Just pick up some trash and help us clean up this great wild camp. The walk to the Crater is well worth it.
