Description

International border, open for vehicles.
Coming from Uzbekistan it took about 1,5h in total. Friendly guys, nothing to pay leaving Uzbekistan. In Tajikistan 25$ (car tax for 1987 Toyota Hiace camper) + 25somoni (desinfectio tax). On both sides only short check of the car.
Car tax is probably only for 2weeks, not sure if we have to extend it at some point.
Border doesn't seem to have many tourists, everyone was really curious
about us.

Right behind the border in Tajikistan there is a small exchange office where you can change dollars. (9500 somoni/1$)

We crossed from Tajikistan to Uzbekistan. Took us 3h. Everybody was very friendly and it was easy, nevertheless a lot of waiting on both sides. Somehow to exit Tajikistan we had to pay 100 TJS, not sure why but couldnt get out of it. On the Uzbekistan side. We had to pay 20350 UZS for desinfection of the car. They checked the car quite well but didn't take anything out.

Waited 2 hours to just get in the gate on the Tajik side. Total circus on the Uzbek side. 2 hours of waiting whilst they stared at our visa. We were then told we had to fly back to Kyrgyzstan. More arguing. Hours passed, we were then allowed in with the car. Can’t wait to get to the exit post into Kyrgyzstan in a few hours to repeat the exercise.

Took us an hour, friendly people. We have a dog, which they all saw, but luckily nobody asked us to pay anything. We also have window tint on our rear windows and hatch, but nobody mentioned anything. We did have to pay the 2$ for the car “disinfection”, but it seemed like all the locals had to pay as well. Overall good experience.

This time we crossed back from Tadzjikistan to Uzbekistan. Still a fast and efficient border, Tadzjiek side took less then five minutes. But the Uzbek side clearly decided it was pay day.

They charged 18 dollar to bring in the dog and 2 dollar do desinfect the car. We didn’t pay this when we entered Uzbekistan earlier from Turkmenistan. So we tried to do other things first, talked to the boss and did the waiting game, but it didn’t help. Prices were listed in a big book.

They also asked money for the tinted windows, but forgot about that later. In the end we payed at the bank and got receipts. But it still felt odd. Total crossing time was one hour.

Tajik side was fast and easy, very friendly people. Usbek side asked for $2 for that car and checked it rather well. Opened almost all cupboards in the inside but didn’t take anything out. One guy was staring at tampons and red lentils for good 10 minutes until I told him what it was for. Clearly this made everyone very nervous and they left the van. The guy who stamps the passports forgot to register our van, so that we had to ‚leave‘ the country again and enter again, so that we ended up with 4 stamps in our passport. Then the system stopped working and they told us to wait for about an hour. We said that we had no time and they finally let us go.

Border crossing from Tajikistan to Uzbekistan.

Tajik side went really fast. Just a stamp and we were good to go. Uzbek side started with two officers who wanted money for disinfecting the car. They only asked 2 dollars, but still... The disinfection was only a pool of rainwater, so we decided not to pay. Tip: just say you want to pay with card as it is not possible. Worked for us.

The rest of the border crossing went very smooth.

Crossed this border from Uzbekistan to Tadzjikistan. Very fast, within one hour everything was done. They don’t get many tourists it seems, everyone was a bit surprised about two Dutch people in a campervan, but all very helpful.

Uzbek side: they check car papers and do customs check, then passport stamp and finished. No costs and nobody asked about registration papers.

Tadzjiek side: stamp passport, wanted to see dog passport. They charged us $5 for “eco tax”, and $25 for the road/customs tax. There is no such thing as eco tax at other Tadzjiek border posts, so I told them I have only $25 dollar and they should figure it out. It caused some confusion, but in the end it was okay. Also: when we translated the paper I got for the “eco tax” later on, it said that it was for our dog, but it also said that this paper is supposed to be free. So we were happy we didn’t pay extra.

I asked for 30 days for the car and that was okay, so we don’t need to extend. They also didn’t need to check the car on the Tadzjiek side, we could leave straight away. All in all pretty smooth and very fast.

Crossed from Tajikistan to Uzbekistan by motorcycle. everybody friendly and professional on both sides. Tajik side took all of 4 minutes to take my customs form, stamp my passport, and wish me bon voyage. Uzbek side was about 2 hours... par for the course. about 85 minutes of queuing and customs, 5 minute cursory luggage inspection, and 30 minutes to pay a speeding fine that I'd accrued the day before I left Uzbekistan the prior month (it was legit, fair play). $30 for going 90 in a 70. worth it.

Everything as already discribed. Quiet border, very friendly officers on both sides, very quick, took us 90min. Car is allowed for 14 days in Tajikistan, if you stay longer, you must go to Dushanbe ( I don’t know where) and pay again 25$. That’s what the officer explained to us. Would highly recommand this border! Couldn’t find the exchange office.
