Description

Really Great Local Family.

Elvin Soy López , the youngest son of the family received us like a brother in his house and immediately we felt part of the family.

They organize tours to the top of Volcan Acatenango, they were born heure and they know so many things about this place.
We stayed one week, helping the father in the fields, the mother in the kitchen with the delicious food preparation and doing dishes/cleaning, and we also hiked up the volcano with equipment to help prepare the new campsites ! And playing Football with all Guides !!

You can park in front of their house, it's really safe and the people of the town are very nice and friendly.

They offer you tours to their Campsite on top of the Acatenango Volcan, with an incredible view of Volcan de Fuego that is extremely active. You can watch the lava explosions all night while sitting by the fire and drinking hot chocolate. In the morning, you can hike to the summit to see the sunrise.

Hope you could have the same experience than we had. The name in the Door is Guias Aprode Tour but they are changing the organization for V-Hikkng Tour.

Latest Check-Ins

We can confirm everything that was said in the older recommendations. We arrived a day early to acclimatize and were warmly welcomed by the family and cooked for by Elvin’s mother. The hike (one way: 9km, 1600 meters in altitude, backpack approx. 10kg) was hard (technically easy) for us (44 and 66), but we made it. It is worth it! Our dog was more than welcome, just be careful: there are a lot of dogs on the mountain. The price all inclusive is 550pp.

We have just done a trek with v-hiking. Trek not super easy for us, 53 years old, but the main thing is to get to the top. Good organization. Elvin's family is adorable and very welcoming. We can sleep in front of Elvin's and leave the motorhome safely. The volcano was in the clouds but the view cleared at 3 a.m.: we were blown away to hear and see the explosions and the lava.

V-Hiking Tours is Elvin’s company of local guides to hike the Acatenango volcano.
Elvin’s number +502 4708-2809, he will send you all the info about the tour in a PDF (English and Spanish) by WhatsApp.

We were a bit undecided if to pick him or Asoava (we really wanted a local guides company and they have so many comments here on iOverlander) but then followed the advice from some friends that took the tour with him. We booked a tour with him and couldn’t have been happier.
Cost is Q350/ pp and it includes: transport from and to Antigua, 4 meals, local guide (usually 2 according to group size), tent and sleeping equipment at the base camp, entrance to the Acatenango park.

Max group size is 15 people and they also organize private tours (from 1 to 3 people), as well as tour to the Volcan de Fuego.

The base camp has a shelter with chairs, benches, a fire place, table and of course amazing views to Volcan de Fuego. There is a pit toilet too.

Tents at the base camp are really well equipped: 2 people tents, with real mattresses and very warm sleeping bags. If it is a cold night, they are more than happy to give you more than one sleeping bag.

We decided to go the night before the hiking to Elvin’s place with our van, and he came to our camping spot in Antigua to take us there. We spent the evening with him and his family, and his mum Rosa cooked some really delicious food. She also prepares the meals for the hike: the chicken and rice she prepared for our pocket lunch was simply delicious!
They were all really welcoming and warm with us, and our guides Jaime and Hector were just amazing.

They took care of each one of us, helping us during the ascent and making us really comfortable at the base camp.
They even allowed us to stay a little longer at the top in the morning so we could take more photos without many people around.

The whole experience was just amazing and most of it has been thanks to this beautiful group of people who really made everything perfect and our hike an unforgettable experience.

Elvin and the guides’ evident passion for what they do and the love for these volcanos is something that definitely improves the experience.
We absolutely recommend him over anyone else, not only because of the experience, but also because part of the income from the tours are invested in some local projects to improve the quality of the community of these families that leave close to the volcano.
