Description

This spot is fantastic. Parked on the top of the canyon, you are rewarded for your long 30km drive in from the main road on the 109 with spectacular views of the canyon valley. It was very windy when we were here, and a little chilly at night and before the sun rose.
There is a small rock fire pit and nothing else. There are pit toilets at the Picketwire Corrals at the North West corner of the Comanche National Grasslands (in which the site is located). Also, if you're entering from the north west corner, before turning right to continue down to this spot, if you stay left, you will hit a trailhead down into the canyon. I believe there is also an iOverlander spot there.
The road in was surprisingly amazing most of the way. The dirt roads were so smooth that we were able to drive 90kph (55mph) down most of them. A few had some serious tire ruts (indicating that it might get REALLY muddy here after a rain), but we were able to avoid the ruts easily, and only slowed down for a few cattle guards.
We can't stress enough how lovely the view into the canyon was and how peaceful a sleep we enjoyed here. There was no garbage anywhere. Let's try to keep in that way.

as described in previous posts. So beautiful and totally worth the drive on the dirt. the dirt roads are very good until you get past the picketwire square, but we pulled our 20 ft camper trailer down to the overlook and found a nice place to park. just have to go slower on some bad corrugated. there's a couple spots to park, we found a huge one that would fit probably two 20ft campers or like 5 vehicles. we spent 2 nights here, so quiet! saw one car the whole 2.5 days. there's a small trail from the overlook/parking area down to the main Dino trail, not the withers canyon trailhead. we saved at least 5 miles of walking by cutting down to the mail trail from this spot (where the road turns left to the withers canyon)..the hike back up was killer but overall it was worth it. the Dino tracks are fricken awesome and it was a great hike.

Amazing spot. Road to get in wasn't bad. This spot is very remote and isolated - love it!!

epic spot, no trash, dirt roads with cattle and deer. windy close to cliff but back off 50m and you're fine. no fences anywhere so drive where your rig can take you.

This is one of the most beautiful spots we have stayed in. Stayed for 3 nights. Hiked to the dinosaur tracksites, which is a must see. The weather was perfect, no wind the whole time we were there. 50’s and 60’s during the day and mid 30’s at night.

As the previous author noted, this location is absolutely gorgeous. It’s hot during the day, but the wind laps up the canyon and keeps you cool. In the evening, local shrubbery offers shade. Once the sun begins to set, temperatures quickly drop to a more comfortable level. Stink bugs are a mild nuisance, but easily managed.

Nice spot just off the road a little further down from the overlook. This spot has a fantastic view overlooking the canyon with a fairly level spot for most rigs that can get this far. Good 4G ATT signal. Fewer cholla and other cacti than other locations.

beautiful place. very quiet. a few people drove by but still felt very secluded. if this spot is taken just keep driving there are some more down the way. it's about .5 miles from the end of the road. no fire pit at this spot anymore. road coming in was a little rough but our 26 ft motorhome made it ok. a lot of washboard roads and muddy ruts on the way in. about 17 miles total from the main road.

Lots of dispersed camping along the canyon rim. Lots of people too. It was a beautiful spot got there in a 2wd E-150.

The views are worth the drive down the long dirt road. The roads were a bit slick for us as we got caught in a storm on our way out and don’t have all terrain tires. It was also pretty windy throughout our stay.
