Description

Free camping from the Wildlife Management. Road in is great. Came in our 30ft Class C with no issues. It's in a bird habitat area. we parked in the picnic area on grass. Highway is 1/4 mile away but little noise from the cars. perfect spot. 4 out of 5 bars of LTE from Verizon.

Free, Gravel road but plenty of places to park up near the ponds

Report Check-In

fairly large gravel area. good view of mountains especially at sunset. only one other vehicle at the lot.

Nice and quiet stop for the night, two other campers here. No pictures because it rained all night and is raining now. Gravel road on the way in, we camped in a 20ft a-frame camper. Good stop for the night. Free and it does have a pit toilet, did not use so can’t report on the condition. Felt safe and secure at this spot.

Easy to get to off the hwy. Flat and open land. One other camper truck. Pouring rain though.

I added a photo of the posted rules and regulations.

This is about my third time overnighting here. Always pleasant. So many birds, so much nature. The mosquitoes have never been a problem for me.

I’m in a van. There are grassy areas next to the parking lot that would be perfectly fine for tenting.

There’s several spots where you can wildcamp here. Everywhere it’s allowed and quite popular. We went for the first gravel parking with a pit toilet, because on other areas there were quite some people. Beginning of October still all open. Few mosquitos even now, but not many. Pretty sunset and sunrise. Pit toilet was clean. Quiet night.

Beautiful sunsets. Have a bug screen with you if you camp here.

SUPER windy in the evening, but it gave way to a lovely sunset. We ended up camping in the spots near the pit toilet and the bushes to hope for some wind shelter. We had the area to ourselves.
We were only passing through, but it would certainly be a sight to come through during the migration.

Nice place and free not to much mosquitoes

Loved it here but the bugs are terrible - so if you don't have a screened rig or enclosure you may be very uncomfortable.

There are actually multiple places to camp. The actual campground is in another location at 47.6699590, -112.0168446. It is a little closer to the highway but is surrounded by trees so it is more private. It is also closer to the boat launch. The kayaking in Davis Lake was great! You can also camp at one of the many parking lots around the lakes. Each has a pit toilet. Our favorite spot was at 47.6833977, -112.0452452. It is nestled between 3 of the lakes/ponds but the bugs seemed to be worse there.

Freezout Lake is a great area for birding and wildlife watching. Watch out for the snakes. We almost stepped on a couple.

We use Google Fi for our internet. Freezout Lake is the best data/phone reception we have had in Montana so far.

2 camping areas with multiple sites available: one on gravel, one on grass. All sites have picnic table. Pit toilets. Trash container at entrance. Several trails between ponds. Supposedly great birding mid March and October (migrating snow geese). Quiet. Can get windy.

BTW the location is a bit inaccurate, the coordinates are 47.66537, -112.0171. You need to take a gravel road next to some Wildlife Management buildings, and drive for around 500 yards, the lot will be on the right

Lovely, very quiet spot! Almost no mosquitoes. The birdwatching season is in thw spring and fall - in the summer we had the place for ourselves. There is quite big gravel lot, pit toilets and a few picnic tables. Definitely recommended!
