Description

This 225 km dirt road follows a mountain ridge and is on your route from Bonito to the North.

We've seen more mammals (pigs, deer, two anteaters), reptiles (Cayman, mainly) birds and nature on this road than in the (private) so-called nature reserves.

To top it off, you'll get to camp rough anywhere along the road. We met some locals after setting up our rooftent, and they were OK with us using a piece of land next to their driveway.

We did not complete the track to Rio Verde, because we ventured further into the basin...

As all the others said, amazing road. We saw 8 Anteaters, 3 Tapir and lots of other animals. We've spent two nights and two days on the road.
Keep in mind that the Anteaters sleep during the day so chances are really low to see them. We only drove from 6am to 9am, had a long siesta and started driving again at around 3pm until sunset. On every drive we saw Anteaters.

You can find lots of places to sleep. Just take the little detour around the bridges and park in that detour. There are quite a few places hidden from the road, but still right next to it, obviously. But there's little to no traffic at night. Of course only possible when dry and until the road is paved. What a shame they are doing this to that beautiful place.

Drove this quiet road and just loved it. We saw everything except a jaguar. 5 anteaters, tapir, deer, armadillo, weasel, macaws, caymans, capybaras, and on and on . Road surface generally good but muddy so our truck needed a good wash after. No issue finding a place to pull over to camp and no cars after dark. This was a definite highlight of our time in the Pantanal.

We drove the 419/427 from Aquidauana to Rio Verde and needed 3 days. We saw 5 anteaters (one of them with a baby) in the part from the iOverlander point "Anteater road" until you drive up the mountain and around 5-5:30 pm and 8-9 am.
But we saw as well: caimans, capybaras, parrots, deers, one tapir, coatis, jabiru, toucans, armadillo, rheas, foxes, different birds, wild pigs.
We saw all the animals until 10 am or from 4 pm.
We always made a long break between 11am and 3 pm at the two spots with shade (river spot and next to bridge, well hidden).
We enjoyed this drive more than Estrada Parque.
The dirt road was in good condition at this moment, only the last ~ 20 km before Rio Verde were really bad washboard.
