Something not right?

Description

We were stopped twice by police in 2 hours trying to scare us into a bribe. Both had the same technique: scare us into a fine that we have to pay in Lima, or miraculously give a little gift to make it all go away. We were at fault... driving like everyone on the roads, but technically breaking 2 laws. Overtake without blinker, seatbelt infraction, headlights off during the day, and the big scare was we didn't have a Peruvian driving license...???

First officer insisted that to avoid going back to Lima and avoid a mountain of paperwork he would help me. How generous! I insisted to only pay the fine because i was returning to Lma and i had time. Then he insists to help again, to which i responded i will only pay a ticket to the station firmly. He nervously motioned me to leave.
The second was much more experienced pulling out all the tricks, my gf driving this time. He threatened to keep her license and fanned out a stack of licenses he was holding saying we need to pay 930 soles in Nazca and they mail it back to you. He also showed photos on his phone of car wrecks saying these are the consequences. He also showed her a photo of naked women sitting on a tree on accident... He followed up by saying he could easily make the fine go away by "our kindness" gesturing to an open notepad. We insisted to only pay a fine, give us a fine and we will pay in your station, or we don't understand what you're asking.
He eventually let off and said adelante. Both times we were targeted on the pista, pulled over very aggressively. Do not give them any money, keep insisting to pay the infraction if you are wrong. Ask for all the paper work (which they do not want to do) and pay at the station. Ask for their name and documents as well to be as official as possible. i once evaded a ticket when my brother recorded the officer with his camera.

Do not pay the bribe, stay firm and most likely they'll let you leave. Avoid giving original documents as hostages.

Got stopped by police. They were really nice just wanted to see our papers.

Report Check-In

The police stopped us and checked really everything, driving license, insurance, passport, lights, seatbelt …. After a short discussion they let us go. Seems they are interested in tourists because many trucks without lights passed by.

Report Check-In

Police was here around 12h30. Asked for license, TIP and insurance. Looked through all the documents very carefully to find something that wasn't right to ask money but didn't find anything. Then asked for passport (which are located in the back of our truck) so we got out and he immediately started to say that it was alright, we can go, whitout showing him our passports. Don't know if it has to do with the fact that we got out of the car or not but he let us go without asking for anything. Not a very nice guy though, we spoke spanish which helped a lot

Report Check-In

Unlucky. Got pulled over and 2 police officers told me I crossed the double line on the road. Which was bullshit. They told me it happend few kilometers back and his colleague would have seen it. First a small story about a lot of accidents that happen and that we needed to be careful. Then they told me I would get a fine.

So the show started. I told them I wanted prueba (proof). They told me they don’t have a camera but just the fact that a police officer would have seen the ‘violation’ is enough. I showed them my camera on the back of the car and the gopro on the front. I started filming the officers as they were still trying to fine me.
I started to call my embassy. Told them that we should go to Lima right now. They told me they don’t have time. I told them that I do and that I am more then willing to drive up there right now to show the footages of my camera’s to his chief.
One of them touched me (whilst I was filming) to try to get my attention as I was arguing with the other one.
That’s where he made a mistake. I told him he is not allowed to touch me and that I would press charges against him.
End of the show.
Took me 20 minutes.

By the way. I was not talking to the embassy just pretending. Had no camera footage as the camera on the back of the car is my reverse camera and the gopro was swittched of.

Please. Do not pay bribes!

Report Check-In

We just passed here, but no police on the road.

Report Check-In

We didn't get pulled over, although there was definitely more police in this area than we have seen anywhere else.

Report Check-In

Didn‘t have any problems. Officer stopped us, asked where we’re from, where we’re going and recommended not to swim in the lagoon in Huacachina as it would be very muddy and then wished us a good trip.
Stop wasn’t exactly at this point, today a little bit further into the direction to Ica.

Report Check-In

Spanish couple with US plates.

We were the only ones stopped by the police. The conversation went as follows:

me: good morning
cop: morning, where are you going?
me: to Ica and Huacachina
cop thinking... nationality?
me: Spain
cop: ok, continue

We are pretty sure if we would be Americans or Europeans no-spanish speakers, the corruption show had started.

Report Check-In

Correction he did not ask for a Peruvian license, i mis understood that part.
