Guatemala
This hotel has nice rooms to rent and large, secure parking for overlanders. Camping in big rigs is permitted, though the bathrooms close at 9:00 when the restaurant closes. Cobán is a natural stopping point between Lake Atitlan and Tikal. The road from Atitlan is long and slow. Casa Gaia was a welcomed stop for us. We stayed in a room ($45 USD) for the night in the rainy season. Food is reasonably priced and available all day.

This place does NOT allow overlanders to sleep in their rigs in their secure parking lot. When I arrived and asked if we could sleep in our truck in their parking lot for the night, the 2 ladies at reception were very rude. They told me that their parking lot is only for guests who rent a hotel room. So, I asked how much it would cost for a couple and a small dog to rent a room. They then told me that I can’t rent a room because I have a dog, so I need to leave because I can’t be in their parking lot unless I’m a guest. I understand that the hotel has rules regarding parking and pets, but it was unnecessary to be so rude to someone inquiring about accommodation options.
