Something not right?

Description

we stayed overnight at the big parking areal beside the entrace to the park when we returned from the glacier Pastoruri. we payed a only 10 soles p/p entrance fee to the park. the toilets were open all night. very friendly staff. the whole road throuh the park and up to the glacier was not very bad. it's a gravel road some time a bit washboard but over all o.k.

If you don't like barking dogs, there's a nice stone circle next to the parking lot where you can pitch your tent. There's enough space for maybe two small tents or a tent and bicycles. The bathroom was open all night. There was nobody at the entrance when we arrived, we just payed the fee for the following day the next morning.

We stayed for one night and felt safe. Nice surroundings in the laguna we spot some flamingos. Clean toilets to use. The next day we visit the glacier.

Report Check-In

We arrived in the afternoon and stayed during the night, waiting for better weather to go to the glacier - unfortunately we had no luck. Nevertheless we had a quiet and safe night here with clean toilets.

wonderful sheltered spot to camp w table to cook on. in response to the below, park entrance fee is 30 soles or 9 usd or a chipotle burrito which is significantly cheaper than both us and can national parks and its hardly worth a comparison bc the ecosystem is so dramatically different. andyour $9 goes toward conservation which is sorely needed in peru. if you only have one opportunity to enter the park, llanganuco and Punta Olympica are certainly more stunning , but this area is fantastic as well.

I was on a solo bike tour from Ecuador to Ushuaia. I camped here for 1 night, out back behind the main building of the Huascarán NP Carpa Entrance Gate. There was space for several tents: more than 2-3 would not have much wind shelter. This was a better campsite than expected. Pros: Peaceful. Modern flush toilets with running water (50 m away). I found a sheltered campsite on the SE corner of the main building, which offered protection against frost and against the NW wind. It had tables for unpacking my gear. I saw no-one while I was there. Cons: cold at night (-5C or 23F).

My campsite was sheltered from dew and from the wind. A better than average site. The next morning my water bottle on my bike was almost frozen. (Better to keep bottles inside the tent). There was an excellent covered area with a table on the east side which received life-giving sun at 06h50. I moved there to have breakfast. I did not camp there as it was exposed to the NW wind at night, and was a little too visible from the road.

Normally one has to pay 30 PEN ($9) to enter the park for the night, with no additional camp fee, but this time I saw no-one when I arrived at 17h20, so both entrance and camping were free. The Carpa gate was supposed to open at 07h00. The next morning I hung around until 07h45 but no-one showed up. I therefore continued on toward the Pastoruri glacier. The downside was that the next day, the ranger at the glacier refused to allow me to visit it. I offered to pay but he said one had to pay at the Carpa entrance or in Huaraz.

This park is not worth it. 30 soles per person per day makes it more expensive than the US National Parks for views that you can get driving in Canada for free. Add to that having to pay for bathrooms without seats and Peruvian quality roads. If you can manage to sneak in without paying, go for it, but we did not and we feel a bit ripped off.

Park entrance fees now 30S per gringo :(

Stayed here for the night after the drive from the coast. Great views and sunset. Cold and windy, but quiet. The road towards the east is absolutely beautiful and you shouldn't miss it! Puya raimondii weren't blooming unfortunately at the moment. To see how much the glacier has already melted is confronting. The dirt road is in okay condition, it's a slow and sometimes bumpy drive but doable!

Free camping at entrance. 10/pp to enter park. Nice views. Quiet at night with lots of stars. Glacier was pretty but receding quickly. This place has a ton of local tourism so expect loads of buses and collectivos on the road.
