Description

We parked here for Rainbow Mountain. Drove through the ‘new rainbow mountain car park’ (iOverlander) and paid the 20s entrance fee. They moved the cones to let us drive up further so only 30 mins walk up. Tourist buses no longer use this road so on the walk up we were alone. Busy at the top until about 1pm

Latest Check-Ins

We rode to the actual rainbow mountain with our motorbikes! There are two paths to get there, one reserved to hikers and donkeys, one reserved to moto taxis. We asked the guards if we could ride to the top with our own motorbikes, initially they said no but when we said we would pay (50 soles each) they agreed to let us pass. Just ride carefully, the trail is fine if you're used to go off road but obviously is at high altitude. Epic!

Arrived at the parking lot around 2:30 pm and we were the only one on the mountain ! Try to be at the mirador not after 4pm otherwise you will see it in the shade! Apart from the rainbow mountain the whole 360° view from the top is worth it!

Drove up to this place with our campervan (3.5 ton, 6m long, 2WD). The road is in good condition.
However, in some parts it is basically just one lane and very close to cliff face. Need to maneuver carefully. Enjoy!

I have to say something, Peru what happened to you? I've been there 5 years ago, we payd 5 soles with toilet included. Now? 5 sol after 1 km 20 sol, when you want to go Valle rojo 10 sol after 800m another 10 sol. 2 sol for toilet even for peru it's 1 sol. People of peru from this location, you are disgusting to me, everywhere I will go I will tell who you are and what happened with you.

We arrived at this parking lot at 6:15am. No tourists, only local people taking things to sell up there. We spend 1 hour to get to the top. Between 7:15 and 8h we had the mountain almost to ourselves, after that a huge crowd came from the other side (buses).

Report Check-In

We’ve been told that most tours from Cusco use the road coming up the other side of the mountain so we chose this road. Additionally it’s only a 2km walk instead of a 3km from the other side ;-) (detour to red valley not included which you absolutely should do!)
Turn off to get here is in Checacupe, then paved until Pitumarca and from there it’s 30km gravel road (in good condition when we drove it). We left Cusco at 9am and were at the car park by 12:30 which turned out to be perfect because after 2pm you have the rainbow mountain and the red valley almost to yourself and the light for photos is just perfect. We walked down to the car park around 4:15 and decided to drive down to get a better sleep (car park is on 4800meters) and made it just before dark to the Plaza of Pitumarca.

Report Check-In

We used this road (see iOverlander entry where to turn left on the road from Pitumarca) and it was fine to drive. We where the only ones here, around 11AM. Ok for 2WD but your suspension should be good... Not a lot of potholes but dirt and gravel road all the way. Wouldn't do it when the weather's bad.
