Description

We wanted to enter Salar Uyuni here when we where stopped by military and a women from the tourism office. After a quick check of our papers the military guy wanted to let us pass and adviced us not to go any further than the Dakar monument because of the water. However, when we were about to leave the tourism lady came and told us it is forbidden to stay at the salar by our selves and that it is also no allowed to sleep there (which is also obviosly a lie). The reason for this is that at the moment there is too much water. When I asked her if we could just follow the dozens of tour cars she said that they are not allowed to take us. The only way we are allowed to go is (oh wonder) with a guide who is here at the entrance of the salar. As they didn't want to let us pass I got really upset because obviosly this is some kind of scam. After a long talk to other tour cars who were passing by and said they couldn't be our guides we accepted our fate and went to the main attractions with the guide the tourism lady hat told us (400bob). The guide was nice and she also right away noticed that this wasn't what I wished for. She told me that at 3pm the tourism lady leaves the checkpoint and that we could enter then following the routes she showed us. Long story short I am conviced this was/is a scam, which could be avoided if you enter just after 3 o'clock.

not even any indication that there is ever a checkpoint. this point should be marked for deletion.

Report Check-In

Still no police or checkpoint... 👮🏽‍♂️

Note 4-July18: you have to cross some salty water to access the salar (~30-40cm).
We just followed some tour cars to find the right way. Possible with a 2WD with high clearance.

Report Check-In

we didn't see police (Sunday and leaving Monday)

Report Check-In

Me too, no checkpoint. Good access to the salar. Don't drive to fast on the salar, beware of potholes.

no police today, water in salar, no passar, no 4x4

Report Check-In

In the rainy season there's no Checkpoint. Spend the night here. A big salt Lake formed here so this is the furthest you can drive on normal roads. Beautiful sunset and nice to walk in the salar.

Report Check-In

No checkpoint when we passed by. Remember the rule - 'no motorcycle? No car? Can't follow me? Not a cop!' just wave and go on by. Lol.

Report Check-In

nobody was here when we were here . Arrived after dark, but couldnt see any sign of a checkpoint.

Report Check-In

A cop was there when we drove in. He asked to see all our paper work and stamped the back of our temporary import permit. He then said we had to pay 5bol/car. When we asked for a receipt he said the stamp was our receipt. We argued for a bit but eventually paid. A cop was also there two days later when we left the Salar.

Report Check-In

there was no sign of a check point, when we drove through twice

Report Check-In

Checked licencse and Aduana papers but really they wanted a 10bol bribe for "not going with a tour agency." We didn't pay "without receipt".
