Description

Perhaps the most lovely vista we’ve had at a campsite! The dirt road is in ok condition. We can see a few bigger campers off in the distance but any further up the gulch or the spur up Gothic it deteriorated quickly! We took a right at the hiking sign/ portable bathrooms and found a nice spot tat could accommodate 2 vans. But those views!!!

Latest Check-Ins

The road is still snow covered in middle of May!

Awesome free spot surrounded by mountains and cows! Saw a lone moose and a few bird species. Reception isn't great (US Cellular). Road getting there has potholes, and the ruts going in to some spots off to the right of the pit toilet are bad. Just be cautious if you don't have a vehicle with decent clearance

4x4 is needed to go all the way back however we saw some skoolies rvs and others vehicles parked closer to the entrance. There are lots of spots scattered around with various views and coverage. We drove to the very last camp spot up the incline to 11k ft in our FJ cruiser and hiked MT Cinnamon 12k ft. Cell service was very spotty. Very clean area we didn’t need to pick up after anyone but of course when you come keep it better than you left it- this place is GORGEOUS! Best spot of the summer with tons of wildflowers.

Report Check-In

Road was covered in snow about 0.5 miles from the National Forest area and not passable in our 2WD van on 5/27/23. The road up to that point was in decent shape though! I imagine this will be accesible in a few weeks

Report Check-In

Mostly empty when we rolled in Sunday afternoon. Good views in all directions.

Very popular spot for people to camp near CB. Road is fine for 2 wheel drive most of the way. Potentially 4x4 needed, but you’d have to drive up the road a long ways. Plenty of RVs and Vans. The area is designated spots only now, so plan accordingly. Views are great. Verizon has 4G data here. ATT has 4G voice, but not great data. We use a weboost and could get decent download speeds with Verizon here.

Report Check-In

Pretty busy. I had to drive about 5 miles in to find a spot. Roads are rough but not terrible. Single lane and narrow with some tight turns. Phone service with ATT is 4G with 1 to 2 bars. Cell booster gets me 2 to 4.

great location 20min up from crested butte. was able to navigate in a Honda fit.

Turn right at the inforxmation board and go all the way up to the mountain. You will find an open space at the end of the road. High clearance required. Amazing view of the top of the mountain.

Beautiful views from this free, boondocking site. Started out here with just one other camper, by 7pm there were 6 more.

Great area for dispersed camping close to Crested Butte. Porta potties near main area (where this is tagged at).

We continued up the northwest road about 1km. No T-Mobile service here. Road gets a bit tougher, but still saw plenty of cars, vans, and trailers. It’s still just a fairy smooth dirt road with a few bumps - it does not get insanely rocky or technical.

We have a 4WD and found two spots away from the main road (our favorite was up a steep hill on the north side of the road), but there are a handful easily accessible without going off road even past the entrance area.

If you go north from the porta potties and pass the first few campsites (which are great), that road gets rocky and steep - with only a few campsites that aren’t so great.

Not much fresh water access (river is in a deep ravine), but Crested Butte has a dump/water station by the municipal water facility (near Gothic & Butte Ave by the Gas Cafe). Gas Cafe has free WiFi, but not much room to work in. Library in town is nice, but the desks were all taken when we visited on a Monday afternoon. Secret Stash Pizza is a good spot to chill out with WiFi and some cheap deals ($6 for pizza, beer, and shot).

Awesome dispersed camping on a gorgeous National Forest Road. 3G cell reception available, porta potties at the beginning of the area. Area got more crowded closer to the weekend.
