It's not a slow car, it's a fast house

Just drive up and start talking to people. Someone will offer a boat, a date and a price. Ask for the captain to confirm. Here is our experience on the river. Sorry this is long. We paid 3,000R for two people, two dogs and a large truck camper. We should have shopped the pricing and departure date more for a better deal.
It is likely that they won’t leave when they say they will. Be patient, plan to sit around the heat and don’t make any future appointments. Confirm things like food, water and facilities. Then stock up on everything you may need for at least 5 days worth. There are no supply stops along the way.
Be prepared for all weather conditions including heat, humidity, direct sun, high winds, driving rain and long dull hours of nothing. A hammock is handy, folding chairs, awning, fans, sunscreen, insect repellant.
The crew was fun, the bugs weren’t so bad, the scenery is amazing, sunset birdwatching was great and it is a very special journey. Even crashing into the bank in a storm and losing an engine was funny in hindsight.
Arriving in Manaus we paid 150R to drive out of the port. Then it all seemed like a long, sweaty dream! (You can see photos on our corresponding blog post)

We talked to these guys as one option. There are many different companies leaving from various docks. Walk around d and gather prices and departure dates. Then trust your gut. See our other posts, nothing goes as planned. Be flexible and prepare for the heat and long delays. Stock up on food and water! Have fun.

Nice beach wild camp, easy to reach from the road, only track on he beach is deeper sand. For 4x4 no problem, others should stay more on the solid areas next to trees.

Carlo, the owner, is really a nice guy. He didn’t have a hose but managed to connect ours to his tank so we could fill up quickly. Open Monday to Saturday 8 to 8.

Be aware of the dogs! One of them bit me out of nowhere when I walked back from the bathroom. Save yourself the trouble and stay in the car!

We spent 3 great nights here. All the way at the end of the road, past the luxury cabins on your left, there’s steepish road up to trail the overlooks the ocean. We camped beside the big tree and had no issues.

The beach was busy on the weekend, but quiet on the weekdays. We met the caretaker of the cabins and his wife and they were friendly.

Nice campground, must apply for permit but is free. Pit toilets and dumpster. This campsite is the “Non-Equestrian” campsite. Has fire pit and picnic tables. Showers and flush toilets are at Equestrian Campsite, but can still be driven too. Beware of mosquitos!

It seems locals are able to use the tunnel as I heard quite a few cars passing by. But that was maybe 10 in total in 3 days so not worth mentioning. And it’s actually a river and not a lake ;-)

Really recommended, calm, beautiful and friendly. We spend almost a week here, became part of the town. Bathrooms available at tourist center. Lovely spot. From here you can visit easily the first fall of Gocta. 7 km approx. Many views and less people than in Cocachimba trail.

Slept here one night. As described by other. Beautiful place. Even on Saturday quiet at night, the first visitors however arrive early in the morning. Biting black flies.

4 ‘luxury’ cabins set on a sand dune overlooking a waterhole. One of our favourite places in South Africa. Well equipped cabin with towels etc provided and large 240V fridge/freezer. No 240V outlets or 12V sockets. Solar powered. Must bring own water. Lots of animals visiting the waterhole including lion and brown hyena. Easy drive in, drive out can be difficult, especially if heavily laden, as a number of dunes to climb on the lee side.

Rest stop pretty large with lots of parking. 2 other Rv’s and lots of trucks. Slept peacefully through the night, police patrolled and was not bothered.

Clean bathrooms open all night, no access to drinking water as far as I could tell. Is a short national wildlife walk right out of the parking lot.

Would recommend for an easy place to sleep right off the highway, although it isn’t beautiful.

We stayed at the overlander/truck site under a huge Baobab - it is closer to rhe pool than the regular campsites. Electricity available, also a small lapa with a table. Great massages - defnitely a recommendation. Ablutions are okay.

A beautiful big house with balconies & special views of nature. Price by end of 2019 was $36 for a 2 people room. Owner’s name is Alberto, he does not live here.. must call +507 6070 8816. He speaks spanish, don’t know if he speaks english. We were short in cash to pay for the night so he accepted a deposit in his bank account (this was easy for is since our bank account is also from Panama). Has private parking for 1 or 2 vehicles.

After a couple nights at a nearby campground we tried this place. It was obvious early on that we weren’t welcome. This place is not a full service campground. It is a spot to part in overgrown weeds in someone’s yard while animals roam around your vehicle. We elected not to do so. Also no services we included at the quoted price of 18,000COP. Very difficult place to find and owner seemed genuinely uninterested in hosting campers of any sort.

Unfortunately neither lonely nor quiet for us. The night we arrived there were four guys at the beach, we presume poaching turtles. Walking along the beach we found 5 empty turtle shells, all recently killed, two even still had eggs in. We reported the matter.
The next morning, a bulldozer and three workers rolled in, flattening the ground and constructing barbecues. Also a lot of marine debris everywhere along the beach. We were planning to stay two nights but left after one. Too bad, as the landscape alone is truly beautiful. Borderline weak unitel 2g.

To anyone, who wants to hike El Altar.

Don‘t leave your car at hacienda Releche! They charge 5$ per vehicle without providing any facilities. They also ask you to leave a deposit of 20 $
for your camping spot if you are going on the 2 day hike. When you return from the hike you have to show them a picture of your tent proving that you did not sleep on their property (close to the refugio).

We even did all of this, but when we returned from the hike there was no one at the hacienda to return us our money. After an hour of waiting and some heated discussion with someone who was working on the property we got the deposit back.

I would recommend you to park your car in the nearby village of la Candelaria and take a bus to the National Park entrance and then sneak around the hacienda and don’t pay the deposit. These people are just taking advantage of their location in front of the volcano while not maintaining anything in the park nor do they provide any service to the tourists that want to hike the volcano.

Some pretty flat area down the bridge when the weather is good. Under the bridge the ground is pretty bad and lots of cow shits. The access to the river is now closed by wires, even if you still could climb it. The fence looks new. Only accessible walking or by bike.
