Malawi-Moz

Malawian side:
10 minutes to stamp out. The lady told us that they do not issue Visa on Arrivals in the Mozambique side, but decided to proceed regardless (they did issue it)

Mozambique side:
Lots of annoying money exchangers etc with horrible rates. Everyone wants to charge you for something.
Official steps:
1: Apply for visa on arrival. 50$. You fill a form and have fingerprints recorded. You need proof of accomodation (!) and a PRINTED covid vaccine cert as of now. We had to pay a guy to print it nearby.
2: Pay for TIP 750 mets. Then you walk back and forth between offices to have the right stamps, signatures etc.
3: Pay 10$ Road Access Fee. We didn't have to pay the most expensive toll on the drove to Vilanculos when we presented the paper, so try it at every toll booth.

The process took 3 hours, and was quite frustrating. However, if you are prepared for the steps and have the cash and papers ready, it could likely be 2 hours.

Edit: Remember you need third party insurance licenced in Moz! Better just to buy it from Hollard insurance online. It takes a few minutes at costs around 15$ for a month.

We stayed here for 4 nights. This is a lovely campsite situated in the grounds of a most beautiful lodge at the gates to Arusha National Park. views of Mt Meru and Mt Kilimanjaro on clear days. Stunning gardens and a viewing tower out over the park. Elephants, bushbuck, giraffe sometimes visit the campsite, we had elephant come when we stayed but he devoured away from the camp and bushbuck, plus a big variety of birdlife including 2 white cheeked hornbill. The campsite has large spaces, a great ablution block with hot running showers and a super kitchen boma again with hot running water. Paul and Erika are such amazing hosts and really welcoming, Paul has alot of knowledge on the bird and wildlife and offers guided tours of Arusha NP in one of their safari vehicles. Also drinks and wonderful meals available. There is also a team of mechanics from @shawsafaris on site in a well appointed workshop and we were able to have our truck serviced and repairs done (see review on Shaw safari) while we camped in this beautiful and peaceful setting. camping 15 USD pppn. Highly recommend. @a.truck.called.wanda

Park as described. Very quiet end of October. No locals around. We slept at 10pm :-)
English teacher arrived 5mins after we parked. Looks like he gets informed by the park warden. We used his service to get SIM card and to exchange money. With his „help“, we got a Simcard which was more expensive and has less GB than the ones mentioned in the comments of the Irancell headquarter. And the money exchange rate we got with his help was worse than the one we got by ourselfes. Money exchange: almost every jewellry exchanges USD/EUR into IRR.

Forgot to mention:
English teacher was with us for about 3 hours (Simcard and money exchange) and he expected his fee to be 30 EUR (we are three cars, so 10 EUR per car). We gave him 15 EUR in total and he was so so about that.

This is about as good as it gets in oil drilling country. Quiet, a few miles off the highway, and near a reservoir.

Don’t bother unless you’re desperate. Wanted 10,000 per person but quickly reduced to 8,000pp. But its not even a real camping spot and they want to put you in a sandy parking lot. Some flies. Not worth the money. Bathrooms are old and hot shower is only for 2000pp more. We didn’t stay. But the lady was fairly nice.

We had a great stay here while staying in Lima. Our Fiat Ducato fitted perfectly. There is a hot shower and great WiFi! John was a wonderful host and took us to a delicious restaurant. He had lots of tips for our travel through Peru, because he too travelled a lot! We can recommend highly to stay here while in Lima!

This is the first large spot on this road. Nice, quiet spot. After this one another big spot follows. After that a larger parking lot with a pit toilet, but that one has a sign of no overnight camping.

Stayed for two nights, very quiet. There were no other vehicles overnight but the whole parking lot was full in the morning. Cute cafe across the street as well. Definitely would stay again, very nice area!

Very nice camp ground, bathrooms are super clean and you can enjoy hot shower if you get some wood and fire it. The rangers are super nice and welcoming and can tell you everything about the park. Spent the night at the parking space next to the camp spot with our rooftop and it was calm, wind was ok thanks to the trees around. Many places for tents. A lot of rabbits and birds around, especially in the evening. Pretty sunset at the lake. Free but make sure to register with the rangers at the entrance before going to the campground.

Good spot as indicated. Picknick tables under tree, walls around give some shelter from the wind. We set up camp right next to the tables in the early evening, and were joined by a Wicked camper later in the evening. Abandoned train wagons and geoglyphs ( :) ) all still there.

Not recommended. Our car (Jeep Compass) leaked oil and we had trouble finding a mechanic who has the right spare part. After finding this spot here in iOverlander we messaged them and they had the spare part. Price of spare part and work were really high. We still left the car there since we had no other options. We told them that we wanted to continue our trip as soon as possible. Car was finished way too late (after 5 days instead of same day as promised), and communication was very chaotic. After their „same day repair“ they said the oil light went on and they need to do some diagnosis, this takes a bit. In the end they did nothing that was really necessary, but we had to pay double the price for the additional diagnosis without prior notice. Three days later the car leaked oil again, even more than before. If needed, maybe just buy the spare part but get the work done elsewhere. Owner is nice, though.

We stayed two different nights passing up and down the coast. There were vans, schoolies and campers. Everyone was quiet and respectful. A few homeless passed through. One woke us yelling, but we fell back asleep with no problem. Verizon signal was good. Beach access just around the corner. The city is just a few blocks away. We would stay, again.
