Alright, so we found this spot and stayed for three nights without issue. HOWEVER, there is a small fenced area of leased land that had a crew of guys working. Bit noisy during the day, and on our way out one of the guys had blocked the road with his car. He did move it for us to leave, but he insisted we were not allowed to be camped at this spot. I'm extremely confident he was wrong as this is designated National Forest land both on Gaia Maps and on a literal sign at the beginning of the dirt road when you turn off the pavement. It says "enjoy your public lands." There is what is clearly a campsite right at these coordinates, and absolutely no signage or road blockage indicating you cannot camp on this public piece of land. But, be aware if you try you may potentially encounter this guy or someone else on a similar power trip. There are also quite a few other options before you get to this one. When you turn off the pavement you can go right into a nice large area with multiple sites and fire rings. There are wonderful views, a fair bit of wind, and decent cell service with T-Mobile. I really loved this spot, and again, I am extremely confident based on the maps, lack of signage prohibiting anything, and the public land welcome sign at the start of the road that camping is certainly allowed here.

Nice place to stay for a night. Rangers are really nice, bathrooms quite basic but clean.
the sunset over the sand dunes (2 kms further, you can go there by car or walk) is amazing!

Wanted to add: The road up from Nueva Rojas to Quito is steep which currently requires 4x4, the other way around should be fine.

The hotel is located 500m off the tarred road. the place is family run. The rooms are large and very clean. there is breakfast. a grill and a cooking area are available. There is a waterfall on the property. Another bigger one is a short walk away. a true paradise.

Four-wheel drive vehicles usually get a discount. A path for 4x4 is very close.

The path is not in any maps visible. Coming from the south you take a piste in the curve on the right hand side. (after the bridge) It leads to an old dirt quarry, we didn’t sleep in the quarry as it is overgrown, but found a greenery spot in between the trees.

Good for one night, road is a little noisy.

A fantastic place for overlanders. Getting there is easy, you don't have to wait more than a few minutes in front of the gate to receive a very warm welcome from Luis or Juliet. You will be looked after very nicely. There is always something to drink or something to eat at very low prices. We paid 12,000 kwanza for a large vehicle with three people for a great space, with benches, chairs, hammock, grill and cooking facilities, clean shower and toilet, electricity and a pool with towels. A fantastic breakfast costs 5,000 kwanza. Luis and Juliet run this little paradise out of their hearts and to help overlanders. we felt very welcome. Luis and Juliet helped us in everything. It's really nice that people like that exist. absolute recommendation.

I’ve stayed in a ridiculous amount of Walmart parking lots, even when I worked at the Walmart. This lot is a level 10 sketch. I pulled in and parked and my dog just started freaking out. Bad vibes, no good. I drove south towards the caverns until there was a pull off. Stay safe!

In my younger days I would have kept the pace up the bumpy hill, but I decided to just play it safe and park in the spots by the highway. It was surprisingly quiet for being so close. Of course this was a Monday in April. Anyway, Good spot if there’s room.

Really smooth progress. I did everything as britta_bordless described. I applied around 11am and was told to come back at 4pm. I already came back at 2:30pm, they told me then the visa isn’t ready yet, but after twenty minutes the guy came and handed me out my visa.
When I tried to open the payment website over Wifi it didn’t worked. You have to use your mobile data instead. The “departure date“ you have to fill in the application form is the date when the Visa will start. From there on it’s valid for three months.

We stayed 9 nights at Las Mercedes.
Facilities were always clean, hot shower with pressure, toilet with paper and soap.
After my hospital stay Ursula and her husband helped me to scan all my documents and she even called her friend, who's a doctor to make sure i understand everything that happened.
It's pricey, but city center is in walking distance and you have all the amenities you could wish for.
Definitely recommend staying here (if you don't mind hearing the traffic).

This is the actual spot to get your gas bottles filled. There is no need to first go to the main office. Find the blue gate door with a 'stop' sign in front. Knock on the gate, and a worker will come out. They know what you need when you stand there holding a gas bottle ! Charegd us 4.5kd for an 11kg German bottle. Come before 12 pm.

This campsite does not deserve a star.
We were there for three days because we wanted to see the caves. The showers don't allow any privacy. For men, the four showers are open, so you can take group showers. For women, the two showers are without curtains and can be seen from the entrance. So women are deprived of any privacy. The toilets don't have doors, because that's where the shower curtains are.
In the shower, the drain was clogged, so you were standing in a puddle. Disgusting.
There's no dump station either. We had to use a full hookup because our tank was full. We had to pay 15 dollars for that. It's an insolence. We've been traveling around the world for five years, but we have never experienced anything like this. we can absolutely not recommend this place.

a beautiful free camp ground within the national monument. no need for cash or even an ATB pass. I was in spot 17 which didn't have ground space for a tent, but I guess we're here to sleep in a vehicle. cell coverage, flushing toilets (the sinks were still shut off for the season) and good company in the surrounding sites.

Stayed two nights , prices have gone up and we opted for a bit of Lucero and paid for a large bungalow .

Place is perfectly located , turn left and left you are ending on promenade , turn right you end up in the old part with the unesco site where there is a lot of gentrification going on and new places opening. There is also a shortcut to the large beach through a restaurant .

Well positioned as place and perfect base for further exploring.

Not many places at campsite , but if they can they will accommodate you

Stretch of land next to the Gambia River. Really nice view onto the river and easy to go for a swim. Some people passed by from the near village, all very friendly and not curious.

Not accessible during rain season, the river will overflow the whole bank.

The track leading here is through two villages and can be seen on Satellite view. The last few hundred meters are through a small forest that’s only horse cart broad, no problem with a car sized vehicle, does get some scratches but not doable with anything bigger.

Good Orange 4G phone reception.

Update: The diesel from this petrol station must have been of really bad quality, our exhaust smelled bad and we had a lower acceleration speed… after fuelling up at Shell all problems disappeared.

Wouldn’t buy fuel here again :(

Great overnight parking in the heart of the River District. Close to breweries, art studios and the river walk trail. A lot of movement during the day but gets quiet at night. I've stayed multiple times and even worked from the lot without any issues. Every time I stay there are about 1-2 other Van's as well.

gnats are a nuisance all day, and swarms of mosquitos attack after sunset. beach is rocky and muddy. view is great. recommend 4x4, but you may be able to go on the beach a bit with 2wd if you air down and have tracks/shovel/off-roading experience. best to walk it first to evaluate. we helped dig people out. driving tip, where you see the sign pointing left to Playa ligui, go right instead, and then take a left to the beach. much easier road and less soft sand and ruts. although there are 2 trashcans here, there is no pickup, so pack in pack out.
