Still a good place to refill water. There is a manual valve to open to get water!

stayed a few kms down river of this spot. we parked in a side road and over the 3 days had a surprising amount of traffic. a few overlanders passed by, A goat herder and a couple of nam water vehicles. nobody stopped but everyone gave a friendly wave. be aware of baboons, there's a large troop in the area. we also found leopard prints. flies are currently at plague level.

We broke down and had to stay here. It was great having ace and a parts store nearby. We weren’t bothered at all. Road noise was a bit much and constant even at night.
4 free nights $20 per each additional night, shade trees, covered picnic tables. Big rigs welcomed. Water and electric. Would stay again.

We stayed one night here. Portable toilet was super clean. Yes, a lot of bird poop on the grass, but beside that, very clean spot. Very quiet after dark aside from a film crew that was shooting a scene on the dock. They came to let us know they were filming. We were the only vehicule here overnight. Still quiet at 8am on Sunday morning.

Did this road going north. Beautiful scenery as compared to the road from Pallasca to Cachicadan. A lot more greener. 117 is a paved road with lots of unpaved sections. 115/116 are unpaved with lots of potholes. But, it nothing compared to the potholes from the road going to Cajabamaba from Huamachuco. That is even worse. On the other hand, I counted 7-8 water crossings, probably because it rained heavily the day before. Still less than 10-15cms. I did this road in my motorcycle without any problems. Saves a bunch of time.

Very pleasant campground. It was full when we arrived on a Saturday night. We were allowed to stay in one of the tent sites in the day use area. Very quiet. Free firewood. Clean pit toilets.

Cost of $12 for the campsite and $5 to enter big bend ranch state park (different from big bend national park). Gravel roads in the campsite and a shared toilet shed overlooking the lower Madera campgrounds. (On the park map, the upper and lower campgrounds are shown together. The lower campsite entrance is east of the upper site entrance and the sign from the road shows the path is for River access. Only after entering the path is there a sign that indicates the lower Madera campsite.) If entering after the visitor centers close without a reservation, you can fill out a slip, stick it on your windshield, camp, and return to pay when the visitor centers open up (at least this works in the offseason when few people use the campgrounds. Not sure if this is possible in peak season and spots are all reserved).

Great place! Full hookup $72, but they were full when I called, so they offered an overflow spot $45. It was basically a flat gravel area across from the full sites. No complaints! Max time is 14nights for civilians, and you have to call their ‘concierge’ to book (within 30d of your stay). Lovely huge park with some shaded areas and lots of picnic tables. Not sure tents are allowed though. Bathrooms spotless. Pretty quiet family park, just one or two cars heard at night.

Upper of upper - near skate park, but on grassy part near the drop to entrance - two others here tonight for sure… and old van and a small trailer/volvo wagon

Quiet after an off-road motorcycle serenade lasting 5-10 minutes… some nice places to eat, drink, do laundry and such nearby

Not for a big rig or trailer combo (except a Volvo wagon and mini trailer home)

Coming from Cuenca, we first stopped at the entrance of the park (4usd/pers) but quickly we moved here, cheaper, better and could fill water.
We fished 2 troots, they cooked them for 7$ each with rice and corn and we didn’t paid anything else. A bit noisy cause the road not so far. Recommanded !
Toilets free clean and open all day/night
Wifi incredibly fast !

Excellent goat and cow cheese. We recommend the tour which ends with a cheese tasting (and a glass of wine). Really worth it.

You don't need to make a reservation, just be sure to be there in time. The schedule is on the website.

The road is rough to get up, but we did it in a pickup truck with a slide in camper. We did use 4WD but you don’t necessarily need to. We drove 200ft past these coordinates to a larger clearing with a brown sign on it.

The view was incredible. We tried to walk to the water but it looks like it’s on private property. It was pretty windy in the evening/morning but that kept the bugs away!

Make sure to keep food/soaps/cosmetics in your car to keep bears away :)

Incredibly beautiful spot right on the river. I was the only one camped here on a Saturday night and the river was much louder than any traffic sounds

An absolutely amazing seafood restaurant with 270 degree sea views. South African owner run, and is the best seafood in the area. Comes highly recommended.

We stayed one night before travelling further south, clean toilets with running water, got to use owners kitchen to prepare our dinner. Since there was some trouble with showers on the campsite, we were offered to use one inside the house. Paid 300nad for 2 persons and a car for 1 night. Owner was making sure we had everything we needed - good stay overall.

Great parking space. We parked far away from the store and main parking. Our large rig plus trailer fit just fine with plenty of turn around space. The store has tons of chocolates, jams, some fresh produce, ice cream, gelato and things to eat. I got the Asian salad and it was delicious and hubs had enchiladas. Very good. They close at 8 so we will venture back in for ice cream later. Great stoping off place for the night.
